Chapter Thirty-Two

2457 Words
EARTH Present day... Kalani left in a hurry but I didn't pay much attention to it. She sometimes acted strangely and I knew she sometimes got headaches as Andrew did, but she kept her comments to herself. I never understood why she always preferred to act so tough.  And I didn't try to follow her. That was a mistake I would come to regret after since a voice inside of me told me to go after her.  "Okay, so, tomorrow we're going to go meet the Oneiroi. I hope you remember who the Oneiroi are because they get offended easily," Andrew started as he looked at each of us and I nodded my head. "I'm not really looking forward to going," Alex said next to me and I gently ran my thumb over her hand under the table. She gave me a sheepish look and then turned away. "Don't worry, we're not going there to fight. We're just going to see if they know anything," Aileen said with a shrug before she sighed and got to her feet. "Now, I want to go see if my father is done with his duties tonight to ask him if he has received news from Olympus and tell him where we're heading tomorrow," she continued before heading towards the door.  Once she was gone, I let out a yawn and shook my head. I didn't know why I felt so tired, I had gotten used to sleeping only the necessary to get through the day.  "Let's all go to bed. Tomorrow we have a long day and we need to be on our best," Andrew suggested, half chuckling as he looked at me. A moment later, the three of us were heading out of the room towards our rooms. Alex took my hand and gently nudged me with her shoulder. I chuckled and smiled and when she didn't say anything, I turned my attention to what was in front of me.  As we turned the corner, I instantly stiffened and froze when I saw the scene before me. Next to me, Alex's breath hitched in her throat and she placed her hand over her mouth in shock. Out of the three, Andrew was the first to react as he pushed past us and ran towards Kalani's still body.  She didn't respond to his touch and he tried to shake her awake but it wasn't working. Andrew placed his fingers on the vein in her neck and his wide eyes turned to me. "She barely has a pulse. Something's happened," he said and I was quickly rushing towards him. Gently, I took her from his arms and focused all my strength on healing her. There was indeed something wrong with her. For some reason, her body had begun to shut down and it took all the power in me not to lose her.  "Kalani," I said through clenched teeth as I tried to shake her. She didn't respond and I tried again, making sure my voice was firmer this time. "Kalani, you have to hang on in there."  I turned to look at Alex who was now standing next to Andrew, looking worried. "Alex, go to my room and get the healing serum," she quickly nodded her head and rushed up the stairs. I looked at Andrew and shook my head,  "I don't know why but she isn't responding how she should. Maybe and hopefully, the serum will give her body a kickstart." Andrew stiffened and nodded his head as Alex's rushed footsteps echoed in the hallway.  "Here, I got it," she said as she reached me looking flushed.  I gave her a thankful look and opened the vial before placing it in Kalani's mouth and holding her up so the liquid could make its way down to her stomach.  Come on, come on, come on, I chanted in my mind as I waited for something to happen.  Everyone seemed to be holding their breath as we waited for something to happen. Suddenly, Kalani's eyes flew open before she gasped for breath. Outside, I could hear the wind howling and pushing through the windows as Kalani moved to the side and started to cough. Placing my hands on her back, I used my powers to calm her body and soon, she was breathing normally and looking at us with confusion in her eyes,  She tried to get to her feet but her legs weren't working properly and she rejected both Andrew's and Alex's help as she crawled to the steps to lean on them. When she turned around her wide, scared eyes looked at us as she shook her head.  "Kalani, you're okay now. But you need to tell us what happened. We just found you unconscious on the ground and when you didn't respond we had to give you some serum to make your body heal," I said slowly but consciously. I didn't like the way she was looking at us. She looked confused and scared as if she were seeing a ghost. "Just tell us what you remember, maybe we can help and it'll help you feel better," Alex said softly as she took a seat next to her and Kalani instantly flinched and tried to move away. Alex's eyebrows creased together as she looked at Kalani and then at me. "I think there's something wrong," she whispered just as Kalani opened her mouth.  "Who the hell are you?" She demanded. Her voice was filled with power and hostility as she looked at each of us with nothing but coldness in her eyes. Andrew stiffened and looked at me. "Is this a normal side effect of the serum?"  I opened and closed my mouth a couple of times before shaking my head. "I-I don't know. I mean, it is possible but I don't think this is the case. Something happened to her mind." "Can you check her?" Andrew asked and Kalani stiffened even more.  I nodded my head and slowly made my way towards Kalani who eyed me closely before raising her hand in front of her. "Hold on, you stay away from me. I don't know any of you and I don't know what's going on. Where am I? Where are my parents?" She demanded as her voice echoed in the hallway. I shared a look with Alex before kneeling and looking at Kalani in the eyes. "Kalani, I'm Mason. I'm a friend of yours. We're all friends. This is Andrew and that is Alex. We only want to help you. Right now we're staying at our other friend's house, Aileen. She isn't here right now but we are. We found you unconscious on our way to our rooms and we gave you some medicine to help you heal but something happened. If you let me, I can check if there's something else wrong," I began as her eyes scanned me for any sign of threat. I could only imagine how confused and scared she felt now that she woke up with no memory of us or of where she was. Truthfully, I didn't know what or how much she remembered, so I tried to keep my explanations as mundane and normal as possible so she wouldn't find any reason to feel threatened by us. "I'm not going to hurt you. I'm just going to place my hands on your temples, alright?" I asked softly as I moved closer. Kalani's eyes remained fixed on me a moment longer before she nodded her head and lowered her hand. I smiled and softly moved my hands to put them on each side of her head. My skin felt cold on her head and a shiver ran through me. This wasn't good. She definitely had a fever.  Closing my eyes to be more precise, I focused my powers on her and scanned her whole body. My attention moved to her brain when I saw it was swollen and that was probably what was causing the amnesia. Once she healed she would probably recover her memories. Slowly, but the amnesia would be temporary.  As I opened my eyes again, I pulled my hands back and noticed she was breathing heavily as she looked at me in awe. "You're a healer," she whispered in disbelief and I tilted my head to the side in confusion. Before I could say anything, Andrew moved to stand next to me as he said, "did you find anything? Is she going to be okay?" Hesitantly, I turned to him and nodded my head. "I think so." Andrew sighed and I saw all the tension leave his body as a small smile appeared on his face. "But I don't know how long it will take. She has a fever and we should probably control it before it gets any worse. Also, her brain is slightly swollen. That's what's probably causing the amnesia. I'm not sure why the serum is taking so long to heal her but we'll have to be patient," I continued as I looked at Kalani who stiffen slightly as I talked. "How are you feeling, Kalani? Do you have any pain?" Slowly, she shook her head. "No, just a slight headache, and I feel very tired." "That's understandable. Let's get you to your room. Are you able to walk or do you want us to carry you?" I asked and she quickly shook her head. "No, I can walk," she said quickly.  "Okay then we'll help you up the steps," I said softly and she nodded her head. I was glad she was cooperating now that she was more rational. She pushed herself to her feet and Alex quickly placed her arm around her back and Kalani leaned on her for support. Andrew was quickly on her other side, and both of them helped Kalani up the stairs. By the time we reached the top, Kalani looked on the brink of fainting and I placed a hand on her arm to keep her awake.  "We're almost there," Alex reassured softly as their room came to view.  I opened the door for them to walk in and as if on automatic, Kalani began to head to her bed as if she knew exactly where everything was.  Alex helped her get under the blankets and she tucked her in before heading into the bathroom to get a wet towel. Kalani's body started to shiver and she only murmured a slight 'thank you' as Alex placed the small towel on her forehead.  "You just focus on getting better, okay?" Alex whispered and Kalani nodded her head. She turned towards me and managed to whisper, "do you know what happened to me?" Pursing my lips together, I shook my head and sighed. "Like I said before. We found you unconscious on the ground but there was no sign of struggle or violence on you so we cannot be certain that someone attacked you. I'm sure you'll remember soon. In the meantime, tell me what you remember about yourself, about your family." Kalani chuckled and shook her head, "well, I know my name is Kalani Himmler. My parents adopted me when I was a baby and they're now working on a campaign. I know that I should probably be back at Hawthorne High with my friends but instead, I'm here. I know that my birth parents are Zeus and Hera and that I was born with powers. I probably already turned sixteen because I can feel them inside of me much stronger than before, and yet, I don't remember what my transition was like. What month is it?" She asked as her eyes began to widen. "It's March. Your birthday was more than four months ago," Andrew whispered and Kalani's breath hitched in her throat. "I can only remember up until October. I remember I had been planning a sweet sixteen celebration but I can't remember what happened after," she said in frustration as tears began to fill her eyes.  "Hey, don't push yourself. Your mind will heal and you'll remember everything in no time. Just try to rest now," Alex whispered as she grabbed Kalani's hand in reassurance. Kalani nodded her head and took a couple of deep breaths to keep herself calm.  We stayed with her until she fell asleep and once she was, the three of us stepped out of the room. "This is definitely strange. I don't think it was a coincidence," I whispered and Andrew nodded his head. "I think the same. Something happened. But I guess that after this, we can't go see the Oneiroi tomorrow. She's not fit to travel, much less fight," Andrew murmured and I nodded.  "No, we can't postpone it any longer. You guys go with Aileen. I'll watch over Kalani and maybe she'll be better in the morning and she'll start to remember. We'll be fine," Alex said sternly as she looked at Andrew and me. I chuckled and nodded my head. She was right. We needed to go no matter what and besides, it wasn't like we were going to be away for days, only a couple of hours.  "Okay, we'll just have to manage without you," Andrew said with a smile and Alex rolled her eyes.  "You're only trying to flatter me but that's okay. I'll take the bait," she said before placing her hand on the knob. "I will keep watch the whole night. You two get some sleep. You're going to need all your energy tomorrow." "She's right. But if you need anything, don't hesitate to come to wake us up. Good night, Alex," Andrew said before giving her one last smile and heading to our room. Once we were alone, I sighed and nodded my head. "He's right. Call us if you need anything. If Kalani's condition worsens overnight, I'll stay with you," I said with a stern look and Alex nodded her head. "Don't worry. Everything will be fine. Go get some sleep," she whispered as she placed a soft kiss on my cheek.  A smile appeared on my face and I quickly cupped her face between my hands as I pulled her in for a kiss. Her lips felt soft and warm against mine and the shocks of electricity that coursed through me only filled me with more energy.  It was only a small kiss, but when I pulled away, I felt calmer. "Good night, love," I whispered and a slight blush covered her cheeks. "Night," she whispered as she sent another kiss my way before walking back into her room.  Once I was back in my room, the first thing I did was inform Aileen of everything that had happened, and just like us, she didn't think it was a coincidence.
