35. Some Things Never Fit Quite Right

Harper twirls in front of the mirror, the soft fabric of the dress fanning out as she does. I watch her spin once, twice, before she stops, her eyes locking onto mine through the reflection. “Well?” she prompts, hands on her hips. I frown. Harper immediately mimics my expression, her lips pressing into a firm line, eyebrows drawn together. “I thought the same.” A small laugh escapes me despite myself, but it quickly fades as she disappears back into the dressing room. A few minutes later, she’s back in another dress. This one is sleeker, champagne-colored, shimmering under the soft boutique lights.
