Chante I was standing in the small back room of the church looking at myself in the mirror. I couldn’t believe that it had been a year since Cat was finally sent to prison. We had been through so much since I started my first day that I felt a little old sometimes. My hands slipped over the soft satin of my beautiful white wedding dress and I smiled. “It’s time, honey.” Mom’s voice went up an octave or two as she grabbed my flowers and rushed to the door. I followed her, and we waited in front of the double doors that led to the church only for a moment before they were opened. After Cat was sentenced to life in prison without parole, and my father was sentenced to life, it felt as if my life could really start for the first time. It felt as if I was free for the first time in my life.
