Chapter 2 Landon Miles

Before Edric could figure out the connection that was hard to explain, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He cursed under his breath and let go of her hand. He excused himself and walked a few steps away from her, talking in a low voice. He hoped it wouldn’t take long. He hoped he could get back to her soon. Elyssa watched him as he talked on the phone, feeling a mix of emotions. She felt happy that he had rescued her from the horrible man, while she also felt curious about who he was and what he did. She reached for her purse and took out her phone, intending to get his number. But before she could, she heard a honk from behind. She turned and saw a taxi driver waving at her, asking her if she needed a ride. She gestured to him to wait for a minute. She wanted to talk to Edric first. She wanted to see him again. She turned back to him, but he was gone. She felt confused and disappointed. She wondered where he had gone and why he had left so suddenly. She wondered if he would ever come back. Edric finished his phone call and looked for Elyssa, but she was also vanished. He saw a taxi driving away and guessed she had left in it. He decided to follow her, hoping to find out where she lived, so maybe he could see his mate next time. He shifted into his wolf form and ran after the taxi, using his enhanced senses to track her scent. He kept a safe distance, making sure he wouldn't be seen by anyone. He followed the taxi to a quiet neighborhood and saw Elyssa get out of it. She paid the driver and walked towards a small house with a red door. She looked around, but didn't notice him hiding behind a tree. He watched her as she walked up the steps and reached for the door knob. She looked happy and relieved, as if she had had a good night. He smiled, feeling glad that she was safe and sound. Then he remembered the call he just answered, and he soon left. Elyssa finally stood in front of her house, feeling tired but content. She had had an eventful night, but she was glad it had ended well. She thought about Edric and how he had saved her from the awful man who had tried to take advantage of her. She thought about how handsome and kind he was. She thought about how he had made her feel things she had never felt before. She wished he had been her date instead of the mediocre man. She wished he had asked for her number or invited her for a drink. She wished he hadn't disappeared so suddenly. She sighed and jammed her key into the keyhole. It squeaked as she jiggled the handle and pushed the door open. She almost made her way in when a quiver in the bush caught her attention. She shut her door quietly. Her sleek brows furrowed and she took a few steps forward. She tucked her auburn strands behind her ears to make sure she heard correctly. The quiver increased and she swallowed a loud gulp, shaken by the idea that a bear or wild dog might be lurking or devouring it's prey there. Slowly, she pulled off her heels, unzipped her purse and drew out her Taser. That Taser had being like a protective servant to her, ever ready to pop when called on. She would have used it on that crazy disappointment if Edric hadn't come to her rescue. She clutched it and tiptoed to the sound source. She drew in a heavy breath as she saw a stranger sheltering at the base of the bush. She heaved a sigh of relief, thankful it wasn't a wild animal but who could that man be? Judging from his sharp, muffled groans, one could tell he was badly hurt. She looked closely without him noticing and sighted a deep indentation on his side, beneath his torn flannel shirt. "Who are you and what're you doing on my property?" She pointed the Taser at him, her eyes wide open, almost not blinking. His head was bent over, making his thick black hair fall like corn silk threads along his forehead and temples. He was oblivious to her presence. Her brows lowered and she glanced around as if in search of answers. Didn't he hear correctly? Or was he too hurt to speak? Her grip tightened and she repeated her words, this time slowly. "Who are you and what are you doing on my property?" Although she acted tough on the outside, deep inside she was trembling with somewhat fear. She watched as he squeaked, trying hard to suppress the pain he was feeling at that moment. Slowly he raised his head, still groaning. For a moment Elyssa lost her breath at the sight of his face. This poor man was charming indeed - those eyes of his were as precious and as red as rubies, as cold as winter, and as mysterious as midnight. His square jaw was balanced by a high forehead and a cheekbone as solid as a block. Could it get any worse? She thought. First it was at the bar and now in the bush close to her house. It puzzled her to think that she'd coincidentally met two very attractive men that evening. She sucked in her cheeks and remained stoic, trying not to focus on his charms. The hurt stranger tried talking but a sharp wince escaped his gritted teeth. He clutched his side as though he didn't want her to see the cut, but that was only making the pain worse. Pendulums of thoughts swung rapidly across her mind: who was this man and how did he get here with such a deep cut? He is injured so he can't possibly hurt me, but if that cut is left uncleansed and undressed it will fester or worse he might die of haemorrhage. But why is he clutching it so hard? Maybe I should help him… no he may be dangerous—" "Put that thing down," he growled, drifting her from her thoughts. "Am not here to hurt you. Just let me be and I'll be out of your property before you know it." Although in his condition, his voice carried some sort of authority. She reluctantly let down her arm, pinning her gaze on him in case of any surprises. "What is your name mister?" She asked, her voice almost quivering. His mysterious orbs studied her as she stood still and the weirdest thing happened. His eyes twitched and his wolf awakened all of a sudden and called out "mate!" but he ignored him, pretty sure he was hysterical as a result of his hurt state. "Landon… Landon Miles." His voice was as cold as ice. Another hard hit. It turned out both men had the same surname. Could they be somehow related? No, she erased the idea as quickly as it came. They lived in a big city, so having the same surname was common. "Let me help you," Elyssa offered, after debating with herself whether to approach him. "I'm a trained nurse and you need medical attention. That wound could get infected or worse, you could bleed to death." "I don't want your help." He heard his wolf howling "mate!" in his head and he snarled, trying to silence it. He couldn't believe that a frail human was his destined mate. He was an Alpha, he deserved someone stronger. Elyssa moved closer, "Please, let me help you. It won't take long, I promise," she said, ignoring his hostility. "I said, leave me alone." He spat out the words and bared his teeth at her. Elyssa stopped, stunned by his rudeness. He was clearly injured and in pain, but he refused her assistance. Did he have a death wish? "Fine then," she said, her lips thinning. "But if you're going to die, do it somewhere else. I don't want the cops knocking on my door tomorrow morning." She folded her arms and walked away, hoping he would come to his senses and ask for her help. But when she looked back, he was still lying there, stubborn and proud. She shook her head and went inside her house, slamming the door behind her. Landon watched her go, feeling a surge of emotions he couldn't understand. He felt anger and resentment towards her for being his mate. He felt pain and regret for pushing her away. He felt curiosity and attraction for her kindness and beauty. He felt...so surprised.
