Chapter 5 Though she tried to hide her graceful figure under a big bomber jacket, painted her eyes dark, and wore her bangs long, Fay couldn’t disguise her striking features. Here she was, sitting on my couch, her long legs folded under her, mumbling words to her mom on the phone. I didn’t remember what being nineteen really felt like anymore. Not quite grown up, I supposed. “All right,” she said, putting her phone back in her jacket. “She’s fine.” I sat in the chair, holding my cup of coffee in my unsteady hands. When she’d shown up, we’d hugged awkwardly and exchanged a few words about her bus trip.
