I’d washed the dishes in the sink, tidied the living room, and prepped Fay’s bed. Leaning against the kitchen counter, sober and nervous, I waited for the coffee to finish brewing. It was 2:26, but I was no longer tired. My second wind had kicked in. Davinder had called fifteen minutes ago to let me know they were on their way. I wasn’t sure what to expect. He hadn’t said much about Fay’s state, but I figured she was drunk and in dire need of sleep. I could handle that. No problem. I poured some fresh coffee into my cup and went to the living room.
