Fay and I walked through the maternity ward and found Elsie’s room. I’d told Fay to be as quiet as she could, but as soon as we crept into my sister’s room, she screamed and ran to her mom. “Is that him?” she asked, poking at the bundle of blankets inside Elsie’s arms. “I can’t see his face.” I unzipped my coat and slipped my hat off. I hadn’t expected a room full of people. Everyone was here. “Fay, come wash your hands,” I said, stepping into the room’s washroom. When we stepped out, Dali hugged me. “You look like you’ve had a rough night. Have one of my mother’s madeleines.” He scooped a yellow pastry out of a box and offered it to me. “Thanks,” I said, feeling hot and dizzy. “Let me see this little boy.” I moved to the bed. This whole scene was surreal. I looked down at my nephew. H
