ADALET...
I was waiting for my friend in a small coffee shop across the street from my job. Judy had sent me a text saying she was stuck in traffic and she would arrive a bit late and told me to wait for her there. I sighed and ordered my white mocha while I waited for my friend.
"Adalet, over here!" yelled someone behind me and when I turned I saw Judy waving her hands, trying to catch my attention. I laughed at my friend and fast-walked towards her.
The two of us hugged and I was the first to pull away, "congratulations J! It's finally happening."
Judy smiled, she was practically glowing with happiness, "Oh Adalet, thanks and of course, as promised, you are officially my maid of honor."
"Adalet!" called one of the guys working in the coffee shop. I walked over to him and to my coffee.
"Thanks," I said politely taking my drink. The dirty blonde haired guy smiled flirtatiously and his hand brushed with mine. I blushed and walked back to where Judy was sitting giving me 'the look'.
"He's cute," commented Judy as soon as I sat down. I looked back at the blonde haired guy and nodded approvingly. He looked around our age, he had blue eyes and was taller than me. Judy playfully shoved me, "you like him."
"What? No I don't J, I was just agreeing with you," I quickly defended looking away from the stranger.
Judy raised an eyebrow and nodded, "okay well, let me order my coffee and then we can talk and I can give you all the details. I'll be right back." I nodded and took a sip from my coffee. When I set it down on the table Judy rushed back with a smirk on her face and a coffee on her hand, that was fast.
In her other hand she was holding a napkin folded in half. "This is for you A, special delivery," she said with a wink as she handed the piece of paper to me. I took the folded napkin and opened it. With black marker there was writing on it:
Cole- 917 248 2334
"Judy Mackenzie, what did you do?" I half whispered, I sneaked a glance at the guy who had given me my coffee, Cole, and he winked and waved at me, making me blush, quickly I turned away. Judy was smirking happily as she saw my reaction and she shrugged, "I didn't do anything, he said he saw me here with you and wanted me to give you this, I'm just the messenger, I swear."
I held back a groan as I looked at my best friend, for a year she had been trying to get me a boyfriend but in the end it never worked out and I got to the conclusion that guys were either plain jerks or little kids. Truthfully I had only been in love once but it had been right before moving to New York, my first love, both of us went our separate ways to fulfill our dreams and since then nobody has caught my attention. I shook away the subject, my love life wasn't something I wanted to talk about, I didn't want to talk about me, period. Judy was more important right now. "So, tell me everything. How did he propose?"
Judy's eyes lit up and she squealed, "This morning, he offered to go with me and walk our dog and I said yes, I would never turn down the chance to spend time with him, and after that we went back home to leave Darling and he took me out for breakfast. I had never been to that restaurant but it looked expensive and all that and then after ordering our food he got down on one knee and proposed! Oh Adalet, I'm so happy! He is perfect and I love him so much!"
I listened patiently as Judy continued, Judy and David had been dating since the second year of college and now, two years later, they were getting married. I felt happy for them but I couldn't help feeling a bit wary when it came to her friend, she was a hopeless romantic and I wouldn't like to see her with her heart broken, ever. Not only that but from someone like David who knows my best friend almost as well as me, I expected more.
"That's great J, and when's the big day?" I asked trying to sound supportive, it would do no good to rain on her parade.
Her friend shrugged, "we're still deciding the date. He says the wedding should be in July and I say March." My eyes widened, it was all going to happen too fast it was now October, in a little over half a year, my friend would be married and who knows what else would happen, it would all change. "What do you think?"
Judy's voice brought me back to reality and I shrugged, "I don't know, maybe a date in between. How about in May?"
"May? Hm well maybe, it's less cold and doesn't rain as much as in April. Thanks A, you know how much I value your opinion and in times like this I'm going to need it more than ever to make it all perfect," said Judy happily. "I can't believe I have you as a friend, you're the best!" she said and I rolled my eyes, she wanted something or else she wouldn't have said anything.
"Right J, we've known each other since Junior year, our friendship is forever," I said playing along and we both laughed. "We should head to the restaurant to get dinner," I suggested while getting up and Judy nodded following me outside. I wasn't really hungry because of the lunch I had shared with William had been very filling but I told myself I had to eat at least a salad or soup.
We walked side by side and talked about what I had missed since I left for London and before we knew it, we had reached the restaurant. We found an empty table and we ordered our food. "So, what happened in London?" asked Judy once her milkshake had arrived and she was drinking from her straw.
I shrugged, I really didn't want to talk about William, not now, not ever, it didn't matter, I would never see him again and telling Judy about it would only encourage those feelings and it was pointless to try. "You know, work, interviewing famous businessmen and all that."
Judy shook her head, "I still don't understand why you work there, it's so boring."
"Hey, it isn't boring, I get to travel and meet other people. Besides, you just had an interview to work there," I pointed out and Judy blushed.
"Yeah, but mostly it's just so that I can help with wedding expenses," she said and of course I knew that was the reason. An adult woman came to our table with our food a few seconds later.
"Thank you," we both said and the woman nodded and walked away.
"So, when will you start planning your wedding?" I asked changing the subject.
"Don't know, probably next week, why?" She asked confusedly.
I shrugged, "orchestra rehearsals will start later this week and I need to organize my schedule so that I can go with you to all the places I'm sure you'll take me."
Judy nodded, " yay! Well I want your opinion, like I said it must be perfect and you know me like the back of your hand so when I freak out and start doubting my choices you will be there to help me see the bigger picture."
I laughed and nodded, "I'll try to be there." We spent a few hours there in the restaurant until the staff practically kicked us out. At the exit we stood quiet and I looked at my phone: 25 new messages, 2 missed calls and what caught my attention more than anything, 11:17pm. "Oh my, it's really late!" I said surprised.
Judy looked at her phone and stood gaping at her screen too. "Damn, I told David I was going to be home by ten, he has been calling me for the past half hour."
"He called me too," I said looking at my phone notifications. One particular message caught my attention, it was from an unknown number, I opened the message:
Hey, this is Cole from the café.
"Judy Ann Mackenzie, you better start talking right now," I said showing her the message and Judy laughed.
"Oh this is rich, he actually did it! I can't believe it, he really wants to go out with you. You should really give him a chance, maybe he isn't that bad," she said and I glared daggers at her. "Why are you looking at me like that? I knew you weren't going to call him so I gave him your number," Judy explained smugly.
I couldn't believe it! "Fine alright, I have to go, unlike you, I do have to work tomorrow," I said and Judy nodded.
"Hey Adalet, tomorrow they'll tell me if I get the job or not, so I might get to see you tomorrow," called Judy behind me, sending me a wink. I nodded and the both of us hugged one last time and got into separate cabs and to our homes.
Back at my apartment I checked the rest of my messages and I realized orchestra rehearsals started the day after tomorrow, great.
................................................................................................................................................................
It has been a week since I got back, a week without free time. If I wasn't at work, I was rehearsing with the orchestra for some big performance and if I wasn't there, I was found with Judy helping her with her wedding preparations. Also, she got the job with Madeline so my days were always spent on talking about the wedding or David and it was starting to get on my nerves. I hadn't seen William after our lunch but I couldn't keep my mind from thinking about him non-stop, it was distracting and annoying.
I felt as a grape hit my nose and I shook my head. "Adalet, are you even listening to me?" asked Judy with an annoyed look on her face. We had decided to get lunch before heading over to look at wedding dresses and cakes. Judy was frowning at me while she played with her blonde curls.
"Sorry J, I dazed off," I said softly while taking a bite of my salad. My friend rolled her eyes but nodded and didn't seem to notice the frown I had when I looked down at my food. Ever since the proposal, Judy has been keeping check on her figure while dragging me along with her. Nevertheless, I never really enjoyed salads so eating this for lunch and dinner was making me grumpy. "What were you saying?" I asked nonchalantly.
Judy looked at me and then at my plate before moving her eyes to me. "I asked if you were finished eating," said Judy slowly and I nodded. "Are you sure? You barely ate anything," she said worriedly and I rolled my eyes.
"No Judy, I do not have an eating disorder, I'm just not hungry right now," I explained and Judy gave me a look before she surrendered.
"Fine, then let's go, we still have a lot to do!" she squealed happily and I smiled. We walked into a bakery with lots of cakes on display, they were all different. Since we were expected, the bakers had made a few options for wedding cakes that were now stacked neatly on a table at the back. "Hello Miss McKenzie, we have been expecting you, I'm Mrs. Robinson but you can call me Meg," said a young woman while smiling kindly at us, "and who will be joining us this evening?" she asked looking at me and extending her hand to me.
Judy looked back at me, "this is my maid of honor, Adalet Trent." The woman nodded and smiled at me. "Shall we get started?" asked Judy and Meg nodded. We spent an hour tasting cakes and frosting, usually Judy would only take a small bite of her piece of cake and would look at me with wide eyes when I ate all the slices I was handed but I was hungry and the cakes tasted amazing. Finally, she decided on a red and white, vanilla flavored cake.
After leaving the bakery, we headed over to the dress shop to look for my bridesmaid dress. "How about red, since the cake will have some red on it and besides, red suits you," my friend suggested and I nodded. After taking my measurements and picking a design we left to a shop next to the one we were in to look at wedding dresses.
Judy tried on a few dresses that caught her attention until finally, one convinced her. "Look at this one!" she said cheerfully, she was practically jumping up and down.
"Try it on," I suggested and she eagerly nodded. After a few minutes, Judy was standing in front of me with a bright smile and tear-filled eyes. "A, this is it," she turned to look at me, "I want this one." I hugged my friend tightly, she was breathtaking and would make a very beautiful bride.
"You look beautiful," I whispered and she looked at me with bright eyes.
"I'll take it," she said and the saleswoman nodded. Judy turned around to look at herself once more in the mirror and then she left for the dressing room. Judy's smile and bright eyes were still on my mind, she was really happy and I was glad although some part of me was unsure. Maybe they were my own insecurities and my jealousy for my friend's dream, she had finally found someone who would cherish her and love her and for that, she was the lucky one.
