Chapter 8
Trevor’s POV
“What are you doing here? Who allowed you entry into our pack? You have no right to be here at all. Leave, I don't want you to ever return,” Heidi’s shrill voice rang through the packhouse.
“We’re Council members and have every right to be here. Who are you to question us? We wanted to ask you what you think you’re doing? We see that you’re moving into the Alpha quarters? He already has a Luna, a fated mate. She's the acting Luna, not you,” one of the Council members stated.
It didn't look good. It looked like we knew Melina wasn’t returning, with Heidi moving all her stuff in. Especially since Heidi’s scent was all over my room, she chose the worst time to try to move in. I never told her to do this; I’m still bound to Melina. Heidi was jumping the gun, making me look even worse in front of Melina’s family and the Council. What possessed her to pull this stunt with them here? This cannot end well.
“I wasn’t speaking to you. You’re the Council. You can go anywhere you like. I’m talking to these nasty bloodsuckers. They have no business here. But if they're looking for Melina. She got upset and just ran off. We don’t know where she is,” Heidi informed the Council members.
“We’re escorting them, and they are our guests. They’re allowed to be here. But it seems you didn’t answer the question. You’re the Beta’s daughter, Heidi Levin, correct? What are you doing moving in with Alpha Trevor? His mate is missing, not dead. You’re not Alpha Trevor’s mate. So, why are you moving in the day after the Luna went missing? We want to speak to you about what happened before Melina disappeared. What can you tell us? We’re investigating it,” the second Council member said.
I went to mindlink her, I had to warn Heidi that it was a trap, except I couldn’t. I couldn’t open the link. I tried repeatedly with no success. She had her back to me, and I couldn’t even move to go to her and warn her. I was frozen in place. Melina’s father was standing next to a man who resembled him. They were both looking right at me, and they must be brothers. From the look on their faces, they knew exactly what was happening to me. Melina’s father patted the other man on his shoulder before walking up the stairs to approach Heidi. I wanted to scream a warning, but we are way past that now. How did everything go so wrong, so fast?
“She doesn’t fit in here, and no one wants her. Some of her kind slaughtered our people. The pack is scared to have her around. A vampire killed Trevor’s best friend, Beta Drake. He will never accept Melina as his fated mate, no matter what kind of pseudo-mutt she is. She can’t phase, she’s not a wolf, she’s just a parasite. I don’t care if she could tell Trevor was her mate. He doesn’t want her. He doesn’t need her, other than for her money. He never loved her. She's just the bane of this pack’s existence. We would all be happy if she never came back,” Heidi’s malicious words caused the pack members present to stop and look at her.
I knew what they were thinking. The proof was right in front of them. If I had known they were coming here, I would have never let her spend the night with me. Why on earth would she say that in front of the Council? It’s like she was admitting she wanted Melina dead. How did she think Melina’s family was going to take that? The council members had entered my room to start the investigation, and now this. There was no way to dig myself out of this, but I had to try. I thought Heidi was smart. Well, smart enough not to incriminate herself, and me as well.
I couldn’t even speak to defend myself from what she implied. The man who had control over me seemed to be very angry. I recognized some of the women near Heidi. They had come to help us get rid of the rogue vampires. After what happened when I found Melina, I was instructed by the other Alphas to return to my pack. They felt I would cause an issue between us and the vampire team.
They feared I would reject her, and the team would refuse the job. It would have been a death sentence for our packs. So, they took me out of the equation. I was not there when it all went down. They were still amazed by what they saw the team do that day. Lucky for me, they liked to talk about it a lot. I had never heard of vampires being able to read minds or know when someone is lying. I guess they didn’t come for this job, as it was to terminate the vampires. No investigation needed.
I felt the fear rise as I realized that the Council trusted them. Trusted them, more than they trusted me. The High Council was coming, and I remembered reading an article two years ago where they were able to replace several Alphas who were not following werewolf laws. I knew their packs had reported them, but when the Council would come, no one would speak against the Alpha. They had used Alpha command on their pack members, the same as I had done to mine.
That was why the team was larger this time. I'm sure they were going to demote and punish me. I was thankful that Melina loved me; she would never allow them to do that to me. She would stand up for me, she always did. I will leave Heidi if Melina can get me out of this. I will stay faithful to Melina and allow her child to be born. I would call off my warriors the second I could mindlink again.
Unfortunately, once my link opened back up about five minutes later, it was too late. I got a mindlink from the team I sent out this morning. They found the four men out there overnight had been killed. They could scent Melina, but the scent disappeared about thirty feet from her last location. They were lying in wait for whoever helped her. I told them to leave Melina alone if they found her, and they agreed. But who knows if she's still alive? Maybe the first team hurt her, or killed her. Then someone showed up to help her. Perhaps that’s where her jerk of a brother was. I’d been shocked that he wasn’t at the gate.
I can’t take the risk of being demoted. I wouldn’t be able to live with the shame of it. It was my birthright. My father will be furious with me. He wasn’t thrilled with Melina being my mate. He told me that having her around would make me stronger, and I was, but I wasn’t that much stronger. It wasn’t enough for me to want to keep her around. It suddenly hits me that Dad will be told the Council is here. I had made sure he hadn’t found out about Melina running off. I won’t be able to hide it from him much longer. Not with all the strangers we have here today.
I think my men might have hurt her. I was praying they hadn't, but in my heart I knew. I had learned from meeting with the other Alphas that a vampire's head has to be removed from their body and burned. There were several steps to go through to ensure they didn’t return. That needed to happen.
“Well, I know you'd be thrilled for her not to return. You have been lying to the pack and inciting them against her. She helped save the members of your pack. She helped kill the fledglings that killed your pack members. Yet, you used the fact that she's a vampire to get the pack against her. To act like she's part of the problem, not the very solution that saved them,” Melina’s father finally spoke.
“She is a bloodsucker. She is the same as they were. Am I wrong? Just because you knocked up a wolf and had kids with her doesn’t make your abominations special. They’re just as much a mistake as that monster she carries in her belly. It doesn’t deserve to see the light of day. I know for a fact that Trevor doesn’t want it. I will provide him with an heir. Her child doesn’t deserve to be the next Alpha. Just because you feel some type of way about your daughter doesn’t mean she ever belonged here. She was stupid for trying to fit in,” Heidi continued speaking.
“So you don’t believe in mates? I find it hard to believe you haven’t found yours yet, Heidi. Ah, yes, there it is. You did find them, and he was an Omega at your former pack. I can feel how angry you were about that. It still bothers you. You liked him, but he wasn’t good enough to be your mate. You want to be Luna so badly, you would resort to anything to make that happen. It would almost be worth it to leave you and Trevor to it. To watch as you slowly ruin this pack. It would be good for your pack members to see exactly who you are. I’m including your father, of course. Wasn’t he there to help you when you told Trevor you were pregnant with his pup, to drive my daughter away? He will be punished, the same as you and Trevor,” Melina’s father stated calmly, as Heidi stared in shock at him.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot you aren’t aware that I can read minds. I asked my brother to make sure Trevor couldn’t give you a heads-up. You don’t have to admit to anything; I already know what you’ve done. You colluded against your Luna to take her place,” Melina’s father spoke again.
“She never had a Luna ceremony, and Trevor never marked her. She's not the Luna here. You’ve been misinformed. I don’t care who you are or what you say. Your words have no power here,” Heidi spoke again, but was much less confident now.
“She is the Alpha’s true mate. So she is the Luna here, even without the ceremony or being marked. Trevor bringing her here and announcing her as his true mate to the pack was enough. But you’re incorrect. Wishing for something to be true doesn’t make it true. The High Council will be here soon. They have worked with this group for several years. They have proven themselves time and again to be not just trustworthy but capable. They have come here several times to assist us as well. They have saved hundreds, probably even thousands, of our kind over the years. Your clear bias against them and painting Melina as evil will be all we need to deal with you. No one has to speak up for you. You gave yourself away when Anton exposed your thoughts and actions. I can assure you that this will not end well for you, your father, or Trevor,” one of the Council members spoke.
Before anyone could answer, Melina’s father, the redhead, and the biggest guy in the group turned and headed for the door. As they passed, Melina’s father said, “We will be back as soon as possible. Keep them here until the Council passes judgment. You know what to do.”
A deep voice came from behind me as my father asked, “Why? What is going on? What have they done?”
