The morning felt awkward to Emily. As they were eating breakfast, the usual conversation between Elena and Evander was absent. They ate in silence, and then Evander said his goodbyes. He still followed the habit of kissing her hand, but their faces were stiff. Elena, especially, seemed cold, offering only a brief nod as Evander said farewell from the doorway. After Evander's car pulled away, Elena returned to the dining room and sat down, her face clouded with sorrow. Her eyes stared blankly at the tabletop. Even when Emily began clearing the breakfast dishes, she remained motionless in her chair. Emily wanted to ask what was wrong, but she felt it wasn't her right or her place.
