Tanner's P.O.V
The next morning I had nothing more to do but wait for feedback and wallow in my pity. I got out of bed and got ready. Today I was going to do some shopping. If Riley was going to be staying with Su for god knows how long, and she wouldn't accept my money, I decided to buy food for her household.
I didn't know what to get, so I threw in everything I could think of. I'm not used to doing my own grocery shopping, so I just went along with what Anna, my housemaid, always stocked my cabinets with, along with some luxuries for Riley and her two kids, when I was finally done after what felt like hours.
I headed to her place and knocked on her door. She didn't look happy to see me but let me in any way... I made three trips to my car, getting everything that I bought. She shook her head, looking at me in an as if she couldn't believe I just did this... I get that she is an independent woman and probably didn't accept much from other people.
But she didn't argue. I was aware that she had lost her husband a little while back due to cancer and that it came as a shock to everyone. She struggled to get back on her feet but made it in spite of everyone thinking that she wasn't going to. I asked her if I could come and see Riley after school, and she told me that if he didn't ask about me, she would have said no.
I left feeling better already. I missed out on so much about Riley growing up, and I knew I could never get those years back, but if he accepted me, I would do everything in my power to show him that he was loved and wanted and that I never planned to abandon him.
Lara's P.O.V
Monica led me to an underground place that smelt like mold and old wine. It's not like I had a choice. The moment I got into the car, two men tied my hands together and put a gag in my mouth... they led me further down a flight of stairs and into a dark room. When one of the men turned on the light switch, I could see better.
And I knew I wasn't going to leave this place anytime soon. It was an old wine cellar, empty barrels lay discarded, wine racks that now only held a few bottles of wine still left, and a steel cot in the far corner of the room. Dread filled my entire being. She was going to leave me in this place.
"You'll be staying here for a while."
I shook my head, no. I tried to say something to her, but I couldn't.
"I warned you to stay away, Lara. Do you have any idea how much I will have to lose if Tanner finds out the truth? I can't risk it. Your son will be well taken care of. I'll make sure to send your friend a cheque every month."
I wanted to tell her that I didn't know he was in New York. If I did, I would never have moved here.
She looked at the guy on my left, and he gripped my arms, then pulled me towards the cot. I struggled against him, but it was of no use. He was stronger and bigger. He threw me on the cot, then tied me to the steel bars, first my feet, then my hands, then around my waist, securing me to it.
"She bathes at least twice a week, give her water but not too much, three small meals a day, always make sure to keep the lights off when you are not in the room and don't forget about what we discussed."
Monica said to the two men, then looked back at me.
"Take care Lara, it really is such a shame. I'll be back to visit you in a week."
Then she was gone.
Tanner's P.O.V
Spending time with Riley was everything I imagined it would be. I explained to him as best as I could that I was his father. I told him about my accident and that it was the reason I wasn't around when he was growing up. He had so many questions I couldn't answer yet, but I promised that he would be the first one I told if I remembered more about my past.
He told me all about the things he liked to eat and the things he hated and, in some ways, we were a lot more alike than I ever would have thought. When I left Suann's place later that afternoon, Samir filled me in on everything and emailed me the files... He told me that these files were buried so deep he almost didn't find anything but that he had help.
Reading through these files, I learned that my accident wasn't an accident... someone sniped my break line... I never drove off any f*****g road. My mother and Jasmin fabricated intimate photos of me and Jasmin to hurt Lara with those pictures were in the email Samir sent to me.
It turns out that Jasmin was married once, then took off with everything and left her husband with nothing but the clothes on his back... What I couldn't understand was why my mother lied to me, why did she hate Lara so much that she wanted to pay her off to stay away from me. Why was Jasmin involved in all of this all of this and who caused my accident.
Was my mother that f*****g deranged that she was capable of killing her own son? And if so, why did she want me dead? I closed my laptop after reading through the files that Samir sent me 5 times and still I had no answers... I was now even more convinced that she had something to do with Lara not returning home.
My blood boiled, and my head pounded against my sculp... Riley was in more danger than I thought. I needed to get him to safety before she did anything to him too. I called Su and asked her if she could meet me outside. I had something I needed to show her and she agreed.
When I pulled up to her house, she was already outside waiting for me. After I showed her the emails I got from Samir, I told her that I believed Riley could be in danger, but she told me Lara's mother had already been there to get him and that they were at Lara's apartment...
I now had to face Lara's mother, someone who probably hated my guts for thinking that I had left her daughter pregnant and alone. If she was anything like Lara, then I wasn't going to get off easy, but I had to try or at least warn her about my mother... I got to the apartment building Su told me about and made my way to Lara's apartment.
I rang the doorbell twice then waited for someone to answer. A woman close to my mother's age opened the door and looked at me from head to toe, gasped out loud and shut the door on my face... not what I was expecting... I thought she was going to s**t all over me, tell me to stay away, or at least ask who the hell I am.
Just as I was about to knock on the door, she pried the door open slowly...
"Now is not a good time, Tanner."
She knew who I was?
"You know who I am?"
"You're the spitting image of my grandson. Of course, I know who you are."
"I just came to talk to you about my mother... can I come in please?"
"Not right now. We can talk in the morning good night."
Then she shut the door in my face again.
