Lara's P.O.V
I smoothed my skirt down for the 100th time before entering the restaurant. Jacky, the woman I was meeting for my interview, told me she was seated at table number 5, and I made my way over to her. She rose from her seat and shook my hand with a wide smile. One would say her smile was too wide for her face, but we weren't here to judge smiles and faces.
Other than her too wide smile, she was pretty, a pixie cut with blonde tips... lips that looked like a perfect bow, though clearly she had them made like that, she gave off a tomboy vibe with her cream pants suit and pale pink shirt.
"Please sit down, I ordered you some water."
"Thank you."
I said as I took my seat and took a sip of the water.
"So, this is not an interview. You got the job and I just need you to go through this and sign it."
She said.
"I got it? Wow, thank you."
"No, thank you, we need someone with your expertise at the club. I understand you worked at Golden Eagles?"
"I still do."
I planned to resign if I got this job.
"Well not anymore. If you agree to work for us, I will personally send in your resignation letter."
I laughed, but she didn't, so I took the time to go over the papers she placed before me.
"It says here that the job is in New York. No one told me about that."
"Yes, the job is in New York. Will that be a problem for you?"
"I have a son."
"Yes, we are aware. Look, we will be paying for everything; your flight, accommodation. We even recommended the best schools for your son."
"I...
"Look, Miss Huston, you built yourself a renowned career here, but they will never offer you what we are. It's still your decision though, but this is a one-time opportunity for you and your son."
She was right. I loved working at the Golden Eagles motorcycle club, but for years I had the same post. I never moved up the ladder at all.
I took a while to think, and she allowed me to as we ordered. She remained quiet as I read over the papers slowly... I would be leaving so much behind my mother... Well, I could work my way up and get her to move to New York within a few months with the salary they were offering, but what about Tracey?
I caved. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. Tracey could visit, she could even move to New York with us if she wanted to. It's not like she had a stable job anyway, right? Or was I being selfish? I signed all the papers that needed to be signed and Jacky told me more about the club and the people I would be working with.
This offer was almost too good to be true, but it offered a better life for Riley too. After she filled me in on everything, she told me she would be in touch with me before the end of the week. We said goodbye and I called my mother as soon as I got into my car.
"Hey mom, can you talk?"
"Sure honey, is everything okay?"
"Yes, everything is fine, I got that job I told you about."
"oh my... Lara, that's wonderful news."
"Yeah... mom, it's in New York."
"New York? You're moving? What about Riley?"
"I guess so. And he's coming too."
"I'm so happy that everything is finally working out for you honey, you deserve this."
"Thank you mom, would you come with us?"
"Oh baby, I would love to, but there are some things you need to do on your own. Go, get settled and when everything is sorted I'll think about moving up there with you, okay?"
My mother has always been a supportive person, even when she didn't like some of my choices. She always wanted me to make my own decisions.
"Thank you mom, I'll miss you."
"I'll miss both of you, but I'll see you soon okay."
We said goodbye and I couldn't help but think how she couldn't get me off the phone fast enough.
She's been on so many dates these past few months, I couldn't even keep up anymore. After my father passed away almost 10 years ago, my mother never dated again, even when I told her she needed someone in her life, that I was old enough to understand that people get lonely, but she wouldn't.
She said it never felt right, like she was cheating on my father or like if she did start dating again, would it mean she didn't love him as much as she did... no matter what I said, she always turned it around. She worried what my father's side of the family would say if she did move on. Not that they cared.
After my dad passed, they turned their backs on mom and me, and she raised me on her own... I'm just happy that she is finally enjoying her life now... I drove to the daycare to pick up Riley and told him about New York. My little munchkin had an old soul... he is bright... and understanding at times, but today wasn't one of them.
"Why do we have to go?"
"Riley, we spoke about me getting a better job. Yes, I didn't know it would be in New York, but it is."
"What about grandma?"
"She will come live with us after we are settled in."
"What about my friends?"
"Riley... you'll make new friends."
"What about Aunt Tracey?"
I had to stop myself from rolling my eyes.
"She can come too if she wants to."
"If we move, can I get a puppy?"
"Can I think about that? Hey, do you know what the best part about my new job is?"
No better way to distract him from the puppy story than this.
"youll get a boyfriend?"
Not this s**t again. Riley has been questioning me about his dad for the past few weeks and I managed to avoid answering the question then he started with this boyfriend s**t.
"No silly, you get to come to work with me. Well, they have a daycare center at the club I'll be working at, so after school I'll pick you up, and maybe you get to see how bikers practice for their races."
That did it; His face lit up like a Christmas tree.
*** 2 weeks later ***
Jacky called me at the end of that week, got all our info and set us up just like she promised she would. We were in New York City by the next week, and she picked us up from the airport. Jacky took us to our apartment, which looked more like a penthouse than an apartment, and my little boy never looked happier.
On the following day, Jacky took us to Riley's new school, then for lunch and our last stop was the club. It was much bigger than the Golden Eagles. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly towards myself and Riley... but what I loved more than anything was my office... I also had a whole team of my own.
"I hope you like it."
Jacky said as we made our way out of the building.
"I do, thank you so much Jacky."
"Hey, like I said don't thank me, you're the one doing us a favor."
"I love your job."
Riley said, running behind me.
"No running, and I love it too."
"Viper"
Jacky said with a nod of her head when a man passed by us... he turned and smiled at her, giving her a nod in return...
Oh no, it couldn't be... his eyes were a different color, this guy had a beard, even his hair was different, yet somehow he looked... I pulled Riley closer to me...
"That's Ezra, our best racer."
I breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn't him.
