Because it was still dark, I heard Mom wake up. I realized it was two a.m. by opening one sleepy eye and concentrating on the clock on the nightstand. Why was she up at such a late hour? And where did she intend to go? The home was still excellent enough for me to hear her door wide open, but it was huge enough for the sound of her switch shimmy to fade away.
