4. The day after

When I stepped out of the shower I brushed out my hair, put some mascara and eye shadow on, and got dressed. I threw on a pair of dark blue jeans, black boots, a white t shirt and a black flowing cardigan. I went downstairs and was very relieved to see the only person in the kitchen getting coffee was Lucy. “Where’d you go last night?” She asked, not even turning to see who it was. I sighed, “I left. I need coffee.” Trying to refrain from saying anything about my little encounter with Keelan. “Here.” She said, handing me a cup of freshly brewed joe. “Was it because of what Sera said?” She asked. I sat down at the island in the kitchen, “No. Actually, I found out that Alaric has a brother.” I took a drink of the hot delicious wake up juice. “Not just any brother, a twin brother.” I looked across the island at her, her face wore surprise. “Yeah.” I said, sighing and taking another drink. She came to sit beside me, “Fill me in. I can sense you’re feeling a lot about this.” She says she’s able to see my aura. I’m not sure about all that, but I do know she’s never wrong about what she senses. Aunt Lucy has long curly red hair, green eyes, and a very slender build. Fawn looks a lot like her. Lucy is always wearing a necklace that looks like the eye of a cat. She fidgets with it when she’s anxious, which she was doing the whole time. I told her everything. Well, almost everything. I kept out the kiss, the little bit about him saying I’m going to marry him, and my dream. I told her just about everything else. “Oh my gosh! This is pretty big, Viv. What are you going to do?” She asked. I downed the last of my coffee and stood up. “I’m going to go visit Fawn at the library, make her go to lunch with me, and then go to work.” I said as I headed towards the door. “Viv you can’t just ignore this.” She said after me. “I can try!” I said back as I closed the door behind me. The town is small so I usually just walk everywhere. I have a crappy little car that mostly just sits in front of the house until it gets too cold to walk around town. Fawn works at the town library. Though the internet has made its way to our little town, the library is still a regular study place. That makes her happy. She loves the feel and smell of the books, I would say she probably reads a book in a day or two these days. When the library is slow and mostly empty she will sit at the front desk and read. Mom frequently used to have to make Fawn stop reading to play with other kids. She’s gone through every type of book you can think of. Honestly, I can’t believe she hasn’t read the entire library after her years of working there. When I walked in I found her sitting at the front desk reading, exactly what I expected since it’s the middle of a school day. “Officially 21 and you’re sitting here reading a book instead of drinking a mimosa for brunch!” I said, fairly loud. To which she responded in her best librarian voice, “Shhhhh! Quiet in the library!” We both laughed. As I sat down beside her she closed up her book. “You disappeared last night. Did mom really upset you that much?” She asked. “I couldn’t give mom that kind of credit.” I replied. She rolled her eyes. “Okay then, where did you go? Even Alaric was asking where you took off to. He said you weren’t answering his calls or texts.” Damn straight I wasn’t. After 13 missed calls, with a voicemail left each time, and 20 text messages I turned my phone off. Come to think of it, I didn’t even grab it off my nightstand this morning. He’s probably losing his mind. “Yeah, so remember how mom was like ‘how well do you even know him?” I tried my hardest to mock her voice because I really didn’t want to burst into tears. “Uh huh” she responded, nodding her head as if to tell me to spill it already. “Well, turns out he has a brother he’s never told me about.” I paused for added effect, “A twin.” She gasped and tossed her hand over her mouth. She was only kind of exaggerating. “How could he hide something like that?” She asked. “I know, right? How can he say he loves me but keep something like that from me?” I answered. She put her hand on my knee and shook her head, “No Viv, I mean how could he hide that? You’ve been to his house, you’ve met his mother. Are there no pictures? Does she not talk about his brother at all?” Now that she mentions it, that’s a really good question. “No, there really isn’t. I don’t understand.” I said. “I think you need to talk to him, Viv. Something seems very weird about that.” She said with a sorry look on her face. She knows that no part of me wants to go talk to him right now. I knew I needed to talk to him, but I was just so upset about it I never really considered that there might be an explanation here. I shook my head, “I’ll talk to him after work tonight. Let’s go to lunch.” As we left the library and went to a little diner down the street I felt his presence. I looked around and saw Keelan through the windows of the mechanic shop across the street. It’s almost as if he could feel me too, because the second my eyes landed on him he looked around like he was looking for me too until our eyes met. I’m not sure why, but I felt a painful urge to feel him touch me. Thank goodness for my sister, she saw me starting to walk across the street and grabbed my arm pulling me back to where she was. She pulled me back to reality and when she did I was all for getting to that damn diner and away from that shop. “Why were you crossing the street dork? The diner is up here.” She asked with confusion. “Oh, umm I just got turned around I guess.” I said trying to fight my urge to turn back towards Keelan. She wasn’t convinced, she knew something was off about me. Downfall of a twin? She always knows when I’m lying, hiding something, or not telling the whole truth. “Mmhmm yeah. Okay when we get seated at the diner I expect some answers Vivian because I can tell something is going on with you.”
