Chapter 3 I lay wide awake beside Jason, staring at the ceiling, my body tense and restless. The room was too quiet, too still, and my thoughts wouldn’t stop spinning. I turned my head to look at him. Jason was sleeping soundly, his back turned to me, his breathing deep and even like nothing in the world could disturb him. I shifted closer, needing his warmth, needing something to hold onto. My hand slid over his stomach as I pressed my chest against his back. “Jason,” I whispered softly. Nothing. He didn’t move. “Jason,” I said again, a little louder this time, shaking him lightly. Still nothing. Frustration and hurt pricked at my chest.
