As I approach the border, the chatter of the pack link gets louder and more garbled. I can't even make out Keaton's voice. My wolf follows the compass of her heart, leading us to our mate. It is now that I swear to myself, I will do whatever it takes to make sure Keaton comes out of this alive. Even if it means sacrificing myself to let him live.
I see a couple of fighter wolves hidden among the trees, they bow slightly as I pass. I feel safer knowing the fighters are watching the packhouse from the trees. Passing them by, I continue the distance to the line. As I approach, I finally see the large group of Blackwood guards, surrounding their Alpha. I know he's going to dislike the fact that I've come out here instead of sticking at the pack house, but my duty is to be by my mate's side.
I smell him before I see him. His authority cuts through the air with tension and deadly intentions. I slowly walk forward, my guards turning and leaving a path for me. Keaton doesn't turn around even when the path is fully cleared and his black wolf is visible. Silently taking my place at his side, his wolf's ears perk a bit.
"Don't even say it" I snap, cutting him off before he can even snap at me for tagging along.
He growls at me, his wolf's tail whipping furiously. No doubt, we'll have words after we deal with whoever entered our land.
Like straight out of a Twilight movie, huge wolves emerge from the fog in front of us. Our fighters take a step forward, in perfect unison. However, the strange wolves don't falter, like others would. They don't seem affected by anything.
"Get behind me," Keaton orders me.
I ignore his command and stand my ground.
The strange intruders suddenly stop, and from what I can see there are at least fifty wolves. It's like a wall of fur and fangs. Then from behind the blockade, emerges a black wolf, an Alpha. Keaton goes ridged, fur sticking up. The new Alpha takes his place in front of his wolves, starring Keaton in the eyes. I hold my breath, holding eye contact with another Alpha could be considered a threat or a sign of respect.
In perfect elegance, the Alpha bows to Keaton. A sign of respect and peace. Keaton calms a bit but stays on alert. He bows in response, so far it's all civil.
"We mean no harm, Alpha. We simply want to talk," an unfamiliar voice reaches our ears.
I can tell it's the Alpha because this voice is full of power. It's the same kind of intense power Keaton holds when he talks.
"You have come unannounced, you were perceived as a threat," Keaton replies, in the same powerful aura.
"Coming unannounced is wise, considering a rogue faction is lurking through these lands."
It makes sense to me, if Blair knew this Alpha was coming, she'd ambush. In this case, trespassing is acceptable.
"What is the nature of your visit?" Josh asks, stepping up next to Keaton, as his Beta duty requires.
"I'm looking for someone-" the Alpha says, his eyes wander in over our crowd. "-Someone in particular."
Then he locks eyes with me, and keeps them on me. I feel my body grow tense and my fur spikes. I step to the side, against Keaton, needing his body to calm me.
"Don't look at her" Keaton growls suddenly, our troops taking a protective step forward.
The Alpha shifts his gaze but seems unaffected by my mate's warning.
"What is her name?" he inquires, nodding in my direction.
"She is my mate," Keaton rumbles, on the brink of snapping.
"Obviously. Her aura tells me that, but what is her name?"
Keaton shifts on his paws, and I know as his mate my duty is to calm him. Not to mention I don't like the way they are talking like I'm not standing right here.
"Luna Lola Ever- Thunders" I quickly substitute my last name for Keaton's. Something tells me the less this mysterious Alpha knows about me the better.
My choice of name surprises Keaton and I can feel him become only more possessive, if it's possible.
"Ah, but you are not from here are you? I can feel it, sadness, death, suffering."
This is too creepy now. He's reading me like a book. The only other person who can read me this well is Keaton, but a stranger shouldn't be able to.
"ENOUGH!" My mate's voice booms, the trees even shake.
The Alpha stops analyzing me but keeps an amused smirk on his face. I want him off our land now.
"Its obvious you didn't come all this way to interrogate our Luna. Who are you searching for?" Josh demands.
"Very well, I'm looking for my brother. I was informed Moonshine has temporarily been absorbed into Blackwood, I'm here to take over his pack until he is well enough to return to the Alpha position."
"Are you referring to Alpha Ashton?" I speak up, now very concerned.
"Yes, he is my younger brother. I thank you for housing him and running his pack but as his brother, I'll take it from here," the Alpha informs.
"Are you aware his mate was a traitor who died in an attack on Blackwood land?" The words are out of my mouth before I realize I've spoken out of turn.
The Alpha looks at me intensly, making me feel more uneasy than before.
"I never met his mate, my brother and I have not spoken in many years. All I want is to take him and his pack with me so he can salvage what little of reputation he has left," he scrunches his snout with venom.
"I understand, but are you aware that Ashton's sister in law is the rogue leader of BloodAsh? That she poses a threat to Moonshine and therefore to your brother?" I ask.
"I am aware of the threat to Ashton, however that doesn't effect my intentions in the slightest. Afterall, I understand she's more interested in you rather than a mentally damaged Alpha."
Growls arise from my pack members, a clear warning to this Alpha to step off it. His words and tone belittle me, like I'm a child.
"She is also equally interested in harming Ashton's child!" I snap, regretting my words.
The Alpha perks up in interest making me realize I've exposed Lucas, how could I be so stupid.
"His mate gave him a child?"
I stay silent, fearing what will happen if I acknowledge my slippage. The Alpha's smirk deepens when I don't answer.
"I'll take the child as well," he decides aloud.
"No!" I shout, nearly launching myself at him. Keaton bites my fur keeping me in place. Blackwood warriors take a defensive stance, supporting me.
"I can see you've grown attached to the child, however they deserve to grow up with their own pack and blood. If the child is male, he must be trained to succeed his father. You have no claim over him, Luna," Ashton's brother points out.
He makes a valid point, but I promised Ashley to take care of Lucas, no matter what. I can't back down on this, not where Lucas is concerned.
"I promised his mother to care for him and raise him as my own, it was her dying wish," I growl, digging my claws into the dirt below me.
"You mean the traidor? I hardly think her word stands considering the destruction she left in her wake, the destruction I now have to clean up. I am taking the boy, that is final."
I make another attempt to attack him, but Keaton holds me back and our warriors create a blockade around me. I can't see the Alpha, but I hear his troops take a defensive position. Keaton cuts me out of the link and continues to talk to the Alpha without me. I fight my guards to be released, I push and shove, but they refuse to step aside. They can't take Lucas, he won't be safe with Ashton, he's too young to understand what would happen, he still thinks I'm his mommy.
The more I think of Lucas being taken, confused and crying, the more I thrash. Soon my guards can't contain me and I hear them call for backup. All I see is in tunnel vision and my strength becomes too much for an ordinary wolf to handle. Through the chaos, a syringe is forced into my neck and an injection is administered into my system. The woods and people around me grow fuzzy before they disappear all together and I fall unconscious.
