Morris POV
"She was one of your father's many conquests. The difference is that she thought she was special. She was his assistant for six months before he replaced her. The stupid woman thought she actually meant something to Trey. When he had her reassigned, she made a scene in the office, but she was far from done trying to insert herself into your father's life.
In fact, when she snuck back into his office and found him f**king his new assistant, she almost killed him. If it weren't for your brothers I would have wished she was successful," she says. "After that she showed up where I was having lunch with a group of socialites, I wouldn't even call friends. She tried to embarrass me but only ended up embarrassing herself. Her parting shot before she was dragged out of the restaurant was that she was pregnant with Trey's love child."
"Oh, my god, how did you not castrate him? I mean I knew he screwed around even though you tried to shield Briar and me from it, but dealing with crazy women. God, mom, I'm so sorry." "Morris, I did what I had to do to make sure that you and your sister were taken care of. Besides, very few of his affairs ever made themselves known to me," she says. I hate that she felt she had no other choice but to stay with that ba**ard.
She grabs my hand, giving it a squeeze. "That's all in the past now. Carl makes me so happy that everything else that happened seems like someone else's life, not mine. I told your sister the same thing. Focus on the present and the future and leave the past where it belongs. Now let me finish the story about that b**ch so you have all the facts to put her in her place. This all happened the year before your grandfather died. Thinking she could find an ally in the old man since she was supposedly carrying one of his grandchildren, she made an appointment to see the rotten pr*ck," she says.
"Its too bad she didn't realize that he was the same as your father, maybe even worse. He wasn't faithful a day of his life and the only child he cared about being born was the first son. Since you were already at the company learning about the business, he didn't give a sh*t about some illegitimate ba**ard are the words I overheard him say to Trey."
"God they were both so evil." "That they were. I'm just glad you are nothing like either of them. You are a good man, Morris. I am proud of you" she says. "Thank you, mom. So what happened after grandpa refused to help her?" A look of disgust flashes in her eyes. "You know what the prenup said about your father losing the company if he sired a child with anyone besides me." Bile rises in my throat as my mind puts the pieces together.
"I have no proof, and they never spoke about her again, but I heard through the nasty b**ch grapevine that your father's mistress was in an accident and lost the child. I also heard that whatever DNA existed was conveniently lost, so paternity could not be determined. She survived, but after that we never heard from her again. I'm still confused about why she would come after you now. Why not go after your father while he was still alive," she asks.
"I'm not sure mom, but if this woman has been holding onto all this hate for this long, I'm worried about what she might do to hurt me. Her play with Loreli didn't work. I know her coming in today with the lawyer may damage my reputation, but I couldn't care less. Maybe I should just pay her the money after everything that dad and grandpa did to her."
"I would say to do what you think is best, but I have a feeling the money is just the beginning. She wants her pound of flesh, and she doesn't care that you aren't the McNair that wronged her. You need to take this woman seriously, Morris. Protect Elise and Emmy because I'm sure she is no more stable than she was all those years ago," my mom says. Fear like I've never known flows through me.
We finish our lunch, but I can't stomach more than half the sandwich. I hug my mother after I walk her to her car. "We will see you tonight at Tesoro's tonight" my mom says before she slides into her car. As I drive back to my office, everything my mother said replays over in my mind. I still don't understand why this woman waited all this time.
How did Melissa and Loreli get involved in her plot? I pull my car into my spot, trying to shake away these questions for now. I need to focus on finishing up my work to get home to my girls. I need to hold my wife and daughter. As I make my way through the parking garage I have that same feeling of being watched as I did last time.
I turn and stop in my tracks when I notice Loreli leaning against the column of the parking garage. She smiles giving me a small wave. I'm tempted to go over and throw her out myself, but instead I head inside the lobby. "Buddy, can you send someone out to make sure that Ms. Patton leaves the parking garage." "Of course, Mr. McNair. She must have walked in because no one would allow her car in to the lot" he says in a panic.
"I know Buddy. It's alright, just have her removed. If she doesn't go willingly, then call the police." He nods, and I take the elevator back to my floor. Once I'm back in my office, I call Bruce. "Hey, man, it's been a while. Is everything alright" he asks. "Actually no, I'm having a problem and I want security for Elise and Emmy until everything is handled."
I give him the short version of everything that has been happening and what my mother told me today. "Sh*t man, your sperm donor is still causing problems even when he's dead. I'll contact Trevor and will set up a meeting with you and Elise. He'll want you to meet the guys before we assign them," Bruce says. "Sounds good. I'll talk to Elise tonight." I hang up and get to work clearing my desk one paper at a time.
When my watch dings its quarter to five I start to pack up my computer in my new bag. Making my way through the building, a feeling of unease washes over me. When the elevator opens to the lobby, I take a tentative step out. Buddy is still near the door along with a man that must be one of the new security guards we hired to walk people to their cars after the incident that landed me in the hospital. I won't take chances with my employees' safety, even though I'm one hundred percent sure I was the target.
"Mr. McNair, heading out for the night," Buddy says when I approach. "Yes, wouldn't want to keep my beautiful wife waiting." "I don't blame you. You are a lucky man," Buddy says. "Mr. McNair, this is Thomas. He will walk you to your car." I give a polite nod even though I feel ridiculous having this man walk me to my car. I'm actually bigger than him, but he is carrying a taser.
Once I'm behind the wheel, Thomas gives me a wave and I pull out of my spot. The drive to my condo is uneventful, and I smile when I see I'm five minutes early when I pull into my spot at the condo. That is until I see a familiar blonde standing near the entrance to the building. Before I even step out of my car, I dial Elise. She picks up, on the second ring. "Morris McNair, I swear if you are calling to say your going to be late after I made your favorite dinner, you are dead meat," she says, and I can't help but chuckle. "I thought we were going to dinner with my mom and Carl tonight." "I told her I wanted to cook so they are supposed to be here any minute."
As if my wife conjured them, Carl and my mother pull into our spare spot. "Elise, they just pulled in next to me. I wasn't calling you to tell you I was going to be late. I was calling to tell you Loreli is pacing outside the condo. I want you to stay inside. I'm going to record her with my phone." "Like hell I will" she says, cutting the call. Sh*t I say as I push the door open.
I make my way up the sidewalk and stop a few feet from Loreli. "What the f**k are you doing outside my house?" Her eyes meet mine, and she tries to smile seductively. "I've missed you Morris" she says, taking a step toward me. I take a step back, praying I can get rid of her before my wife gets out here. I don't need Elise going to jail. "Who is this Morris" my mother asks from behind me.
"Do you remember the woman that worked in my office and has a few screws loose? This is her." Anger flashes on her face before she plasters back on her fake smile. "You must be Morris's mother. I'm his girlfriend Loreli until he divorces Elise. Then I'll be his wife," she says, stepping toward my mother. I step in front of her, blocking Loreli from getting close. "Holy sh*t, she is delusional" my mother says. The slamming of a door has us all looking toward the building.
I quickly maneuver myself around Loreli and Carl moves in front of my mother. I wrap my arms around Elise as soon as she reaches me. "You better leave you crazy b**ch. I don't know what you don't understand but my husband does not want you," Elise yells. "Oh, Elise, I'm sorry all of this is hurting you, but Morris wants me. You just don't do it for him anymore," Loreli says. Without warning, my mother steps around Carl and steps in front of Loreli. "You need to leave before I let my husband make you leave. If you come near my son or daughter-in-law again, I will make sure you regret it."
"You don't understand we're in love." "I do understand that you are delusional and trespassing. If I know my son, he has recorded this interaction." Loreli's eyes move to me and I nod with a smirk on my face. My mother takes a step closer and before Carl reaches her she says something that has all the color leaving Loreli's face. Loreli quickly turns, leaving like her a** is on fire.
