Larissa hid in her room as long as she could. She was starving. She couldn’t stay in there any longer. She walked to the door. She dreaded seeing Bruce again. He was making her feel uncomfortable the more time they spend together.
He’s going to become your husband soon, a small voice said in the back of her mind. Larissa closed her eyes at that thought. She needed to make peace about that.
She opened the door and walked out. She listened for any movements in the house, and then quickly made her way down the stairs. She walked to the kitchen that she spied in the morning when she made her rounds.
She walked in, breathing a sigh of relief when she found it empty. She moved quickly to the fridge and opened it. She looked around for something quick she could make for herself. She didn’t want to linger in there. Bruce might show up.
She quickly made a sandwich with the cold meats she found. She ate it quickly and was about to walk out of the kitchen when she heard a strange sound. She stilled and listened, hoping the sound would come again. She heard it again, and it sounded like the breaking of glass.
She walked to the door. Bruce’s bodyguards were in the house. They must have heard it too. Larissa waited to hear the rushing sound of feet to show that they heard it. But there was nothing.
Where were they? She asked herself as she pushed the door open. She walked out of the kitchen and plastered her back against the wall. She listened for the sound again, but she couldn’t hear anything anymore.
She looked around her, wondering where Bruce’s bodyguards were. It was strange that none of them heard the sound.
Larissa walked to Bruce’s office, because that’s where the intruder came in. She opened the door slowly, making sure to be as silent as possible. The room was dark, with the only light coming through the window. She looked inside but she saw nothing. The window was intact too.
Was she dreaming? Larissa asked herself.
She was sure she heard something. She shook her head and walked back towards the stairs. The doorbell chimed just as she walked upstairs.
She turned and walked to the door. She looked at the security monitor at the door, and saw that it was Teresa. Larissa pulled the door open.
“Hey,” she said surprised to see her there. She usually called when she came to her see her. Larissa stared at her. Was she here for Bruce?
“Are you going to let me in?” Teresa asked looking over her shoulder into the house.
Yep, she was here for Bruce. Larissa stepped to the side and let her in. “I wasn’t expecting you.”
“Oh that…I… it’s …wow. The house is huge,” Teresa said looking around her. She ran to the staircase and looked up. “It’s amazing.” She said, her voice going high. Larissa cringed and looked up the stairs. She hoped Bruce didn’t come down there. She didn’t even know how he felt about visitors…let alone ones who showed up unannounced. Teresa admired Bruce’s house, making as much noise as possible. Two bodyguards appeared then.
“Is everything alright?” one of them asked.
“Yes. My sister is a little drunk,” Larissa said. They nodded and started to make their rounds. Larissa stared at them wondering where they were a few minutes ago when she heard the sound. Or maybe it wasn’t a real sound since she was the only one who heard it.
Maybe, she thought.
“Are you going to offer me something to drink?” Teresa turned to face her with a brilliant smile. She was deliberately being a nuisance, Larissa thought.
“You’re staying?” she asked looking up the stairs again.
“Yes. I never thought I would get the opportunity to be in Bruce Tak’s house. And I am taking advantage of it while I still can. How long is your job going to last anyway?” Teresa asked still speaking too loud.
“Shhh…” Larissa said rushing to her and placing her hand over her lips. “Don’t say that out loud. I signed an NDA. You’re not supposed to know what I am doing her, except that I am his wife.”
Teresa pulled away from her and stared at her funny.
“What?” Larissa asked.
“Nothing,” she said walking towards the kitchen. Larissa groaned. She looked up at the ceiling praying for patience. She followed Teresa.
“One drink, Teresa. One,” she said pushing the kitchen door open. She opened the fridge and pulled out a bottle of beer she saw in there.
“Thanks,” she smiled at her. She popped the lid with her teeth and took a healthy swallow. She looked around the kitchen running her hand over surfaces. “He’s really rich, isn’t he?” she asked, turning to face her.
Uhhh…Larissa didn’t know what to say to that. Wasn’t it obvious? The man was a super star.
“Looks like you got it,” Teresa said taking another drink.
“What?” Larissa asked a little confused.
“What I’ve always wanted. The picket fence, the man…” she trailed off clicking her tongue. “A famous one at that.”
What? Larissa stared at her, her confusion deepening. “It’s fake, everything is fake, remember?” she asked her. Teresa stared at her for a minute as if she didn’t believe her or something. A tense moment past between them.
“Can I use your bathroom?” she asked.
“Fourth door on your right,” Larissa said.
“Hold this for me,” Teresa said. She walked to her, and handed her the beer before she walked out of the kitchen.
“What’s wrong with her?” she asked. She shook her head. Teresa was being her mean self again, Larissa thought with a sigh. She walked to the sink and dumped the beer down the drain. She shouldn’t drink anymore.
Larissa sat down and waited. Minutes ticked by and Teresa wasn’t coming back. Larissa got up and went to find her. She knocked on the bathroom door, and there was no answer.
“Teresa?” she called. She tried the door, and it was locked. “Teresa stop playing. This is not my house.” Larissa said irritated. A few seconds went by and she was still not opening the door. Larissa rattled the door handle. She was about to slam her shoulder into it when Teresa spoke behind her.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
Larissa turned around and stared at her. Bruce stood behind Teresa staring at her.
“Where did you come from?” Larissa asked staring at Teresa.
“The kitchen of course,” she said surprised. “I went in there and you were not there. I was looking for you when Bruce found me.”
Larissa stared at Bruce, and he nodded his head.
“Are you alright?” Teresa asked stepping close to her.
“I’m fine,” Larissa said. She felt Bruce’s eyes on her. And she could see the concern in his eyes. That unsettled her. She was fine. Why were they staring at her as is she was sick or something?
Bruce said nothing. He turned and left her standing there with Teresa. Larissa waited for a few minutes to make sure that he was gone.
“You, out,” she said pointing at Teresa. “Are you trying to get me fired on my first day. I told you how important this is. Now, go. And don’t come back without calling first.” Larissa pushed Teresa towards the door.
“Alright. I am going,” she said walking to the door. She opened it and walked out. She turned around and faced her. “Oh, I forgot. Mom and dad saw the splash you two made. They want to meet him.”
Larissa groaned and closed the door in her face.
She’ll have to tell her adoptive parents that it was fake too. She couldn’t lie to them. And there was definitely no reason for them to meet Bruce Tak.
Nope, Larissa thought as she pushed from the door. She ran up the stairs and closed herself in her room.
