They gathered at Orkedah's house, since she lived closest to the northern gate. The middle-age archer led them up a ladder, onto her roof. Across the street, they could see through the alley to the southern gate.
"Will this do?" Orkedah asked.
"It should," Ninsianna said. "Try to find things that will give us cover." [163]
They crept back downstairs and grabbed anything they could find; two sleeping pallets, a food-prep table, and a wooden chest, all things that could stop an arrow so long as they kept their heads down. Orkedah sent her children, and parents, to safety.
"Maybe we should split up?" Alalah suggested.
"Maybe?" Ninsianna said uncertainly. Pareesa had been the one who paid attention to Mikhail's prattlings
