Chapter 12
ANA
"Ana..."
I groaned and stirred in my sleep but kept my eyes closed.
"Ana, hey Ana." I felt as someone nudged me impatiently, I brushed them off and sighed.
I woke up abruptly as I felt water being sprayed on my face. My eyes focused on Clary who was looking at me amused. "What is your problem?" I asked annoyed and she laughed loudly. I sat up and looked at my friend who was still laughing. Her blonde curls were messy and she was still wearing her pink, expensive-looking, probably silk, pajamas.
"Let's go find something to eat," I said getting up before looking at the clock that marked 8:00am. My aunt had probably already left for work since she worked most Saturdays until noon. Clary followed me to the kitchen and we decided to make scrambled eggs.
When it was ready we sat on the couch in the living room with our plates as we watched the TV. For a while we sat there even after we finished our breakfast. Suddenly Clary's phone rang. "I'll be back," she said getting up with a frown.
After a while she came back looking irritated, "I have to go Ana, my mother is going to pick me up soon. I'll help you clean up quickly before I leave though." She picked up our plates and took them to the sink in the kitchen and then we started cleaning up.
After a couple of minutes I heard the doorbell. Clary and I had finished cleaning with minutes to spare so we were watching TV. Both of us got up and I walked my friend to the door. "Thanks for inviting me Ana, we should do this more often," she said with a smile and I only nodded.
After closing the door I sighed, I went up to my room and played music as loud as I could, I needed a distraction. Last night's visit had left me shaken and I couldn't stop thinking about what they might want to tell me.
I sighed and reached for my backpack to do my homework. I finished all of it and the projects by 6pm. I turned off the music and walked down to the kitchen. Aunt Daniela had yet to arrive but since I had nothing to do I decided to prepare dinner.
I made lasagna and still had some time to spare so I made some brownies. When my aunt opened the door I was setting the table. She came into the kitchen with a smile, "it smells wonderful Ana, what did you make?"
I smiled faintly, "just lasagna and some brownies." My aunt nodded and kissed my cheek before going to the bathroom to wash her hands. In less than a minute, both of us were sitting at the table eating silently. My aunt probably noticed my gloomy behavior and spoke. "so, when did Clary leave?"
I shrugged, "before noon, she had something important to do today."
My aunt nodded and resumed eating. I knew she was only trying to lighten the mood but I didn't really feel like talking but I was going to try. I cleared my throat and my aunt looked at me, "did anything interesting happen at work today?"
My aunt shook her head, "not really, Mr. Martinez is still trying to find a loophole in the contract he made and I got a strange call today." I raised an eyebrow and she continued, "officer Smith wants me to go to the station on Monday, he says he has something to discuss."
My eyes widened and made me wonder what that could be about. "Do you know why?" I asked and my aunt shook her head.
"As soon as I know you'll be the first to know," she said with a questioning look in her eyes. Did she think I had anything to do with whatever it was? I nodded and picked up my plate before setting it on the sink. My aunt followed and started washing the dishes. "I'll take it from here Ana, you don't have to clean."
I nodded and headed up to my room. It was 9:30 now, sleep wasn't an option since I still wasn't tired so I grabbed my sketch book and began drawing. I didn't know what I was drawing, I let my hands move freely until it began to take shape.
When I realized what I was drawing I stopped. On the paper was a sketch of a young man smiling down adoringly at a girl he had in his arms. Those eyes, eyes I missed even though I had only seen them a few times. Ethan's eyes. The girl he was holding, it was me. I inhaled sharply and closed the sketch book quickly.
I got into bed and covered myself with the blankets. Everywhere I looked, my eyes saw Ethan, his eyes, his smooth skin, his soft-looking lips... I shook my head and shut my eyes. My imagination got out of hand and I saw Ethan as he looked down at me. His forehead was resting on mine and slowly his lips came down to mine.
Then the scene changed and I was walking in the park with my sister. We looked so happy and full of life. Like the last image, this one faded and changed to another scene. I was in my old house. As I looked around I could see my things where they were before. There was a knock on my door and my parents walked in hand-in-hand and they hugged me tightly goodnight before kissing my forehead and leaving.
I opened my eyes and I felt small tears drop from my eyes. More tears followed and a loud sob followed. I quickly covered my mouth but I didn't stop crying. Time seemed to fly but it didn't matter, I had lost so much in so little time, I wanted that back, I didn't want it to hurt anymore.
Unconsciously I walked to my bathroom and with a sharp object I began to cut my wrist. I knew it was wrong, that it wasn't the answer but in that brief moment I needed relief and that was the only way I knew how to find it as I continued crying silently into the night.
