Chapter 16 Pressing the phone between my shoulder and cheek, I check my reflection in the bathroom mirror and tighten the knot of my blue tie. Not bad. Not bad at all. I’ve lost some weight since I stopped boozing, and I look a little like my old self. I can still pass for twenty-seven. For a brief moment, I think about Shay. About how he’s doing. I heard through a friend of ours he’s seeing someone. A writer. Another broke freelancer. Oh, my beautiful Shay, will you ever learn? “What time will you be here?” my mother asks on the phone. She sounds agitated but still under control. She’s been cooking all evening and part of last night. “God, we haven’t done a real Christmas dinner in years,” she cries. “My kitchen looks like an old Star Trek episode, and the girls aren’t helping at all.
