Fresh start

Jessica POV It was getting close to 5:00pm, so I made my way back to the hospital. While I walked, I couldn’t help but think how strange it was, that I had zero memories of my previous life. I’m completely starting fresh, who knows, if I’ll ever regain my old memories. I’m a fighter though, I’ll make it. That, I know. I reached the hospital and I saw that Samantha was already waiting for me out front. “Hey, you! You ready to go.” Samantha asked, with a big smile. “Sure am.” I said, I couldn’t help but smile back, her ‘happy-go-lucky’ mood, was contagious. “It’s only about a fifteen-minute walk.” She said, as she started to walk and I followed her. “What are you feeling like for dinner?” She asked and glanced over at me. “Um, I’m good.” I said softly, knowing I had no money and there was no way I was going to ask her to pay for my food and provide me with free accommodations. “Well, if you're not going to pick. I will, Chinese it is.” She said, with her beaming smile. She quickly yanked on my arm and pulled me in through the front doors of a restaurant. I wasn’t expecting it, I didn’t even see the name of it. “I’m gonna get us some takeout.” She said, while walking towards the ordering counter, leaving me standing by the front doors. Five minutes later, she walked back over to me, carrying a bag with takeout containers inside. We left the restaurant and continued to walk. “So, I might have got lucky with a job, while I was out today.” I said while glancing her way. “Wow, really? What kind of job?” She asked, suspiciously, with one eyebrow raised. “It’s legal, I promise.” I jokingly answered and we both started to chuckle. “I walked into a cute little coffee shop named, Rise and Shine and there was a young, handsome man working. I casually asked, if they were hiring and he happened to be the owner, so I’m meeting him there, tomorrow morning. He didn’t say that I had the job, but it sounds promising.” I said, with a big excited smile. “Wow Jessica, that’s awesome. You work fast, already meeting handsome guys, eh?” She teased while wiggling her eyebrows at me. “I think, I would like to get my life back before I start meeting guys.” I replied, with a light chuckle. “There’s nothing wrong with a little flirting if it gets you a job.” She said while winking at me. I just chuckled, while shaking my head. “Here we are.” Samantha said as she stopped in front of a high-rise apartment building. “Wow, this place seems really nice.” I said as I took in the place. There looked to be around twenty-five floors and it was a new modern building. “Ya, the apartment isn’t huge, but it’s modern and has a patio, so I really like it.” She said while swiping her fob against the sensor on the door, unlocking it. Once inside, she hit the elevator door and the doors opened immediately. We got in and I watched as she pushed number nineteen on the keypad, before the doors closed. Once we reached the nineteenth floor, she walked over to door number 1915 and used a key to unlock it. She held the door open for me and motioned for me to walk in and I did. The apartment was open concept, with a modern kitchen that was next to the front door, and an island separating it from the living room. I could see at the far end of the living room, there were a set of sliding doors that led out to the patio. She was right, the apartment was small, but it was clean and had everything you would need. I saw two closed doors down a little hall and on the opposite side of the living room, there was another closed door. “This will be your room.” Samantha said, as she opened a door and motioned for me to look inside. It was a small room, with a queen size bed, two nightstands, and a tall dresser. It was perfect, I thought to myself. “Over on that side, is my bedroom and this here, is the bathroom.” She said as she opened the bathroom door, showing me inside. It was your standard, apartment size bathroom, it had a shower, toilet, and sink. That’s all I need. “This place is really perfect. Thank you for letting me stay, until I can get my own place.” I said while offering her a smile. “Don’t mention it. As I said, it gets lonely around here. Now, I have a wine buddy.” She said with a smile before it fell and she continued. “You do like wine, right?” She asked, with an eyebrow-raising, silently warning me not to say no. I chuckled at her. While shaking my head. “I don’t even remember my name. Do you think I remember if I like wine?” I said jokingly, but it’s true, I had no clue. “Well let’s fix that.” She said, as she walked to the fridge and pulled out a bottle of wine. She grabbed two wine glasses and poured the wine into the glasses, before handing me one. “Cheers.” She said while clinking my glass and we both took a sip. “Yup, I like wine.” I blurted out, as I took a second sip. She chuckled. “See, I knew I liked you.” She said teasingly, while she grabbed the take-out containers, utensils, and napkins, before heading to the living room and sitting on the couch. I chuckled and followed her lead. “What do you want to wa- - -. Umm, how about I pick.” She said sheepishly, as she remembered, I wouldn’t know what I like to watch. She put on a show and said it was called ‘Friends’, she promised me that I would like it. She handed me a takeout container, I thanked her and we both settled back on the couch while digging into our food. After a couple of episodes of ‘Friends’ and a second glass of wine, I was feeling pretty sleepy. It had been a crazy two days for me. “I’m getting pretty tired. I’m going to head to bed.” I said. “Oh ya, no prob. Let me get you a pair of pajamas to sleep in.” Samantha offered, as she stood from the couch and headed to her room. She came out a minute later, holding a pair of pajama bottoms, a black T-shirt, a pair of black leggings, a dark pink tank top, and a pair of panties. “Here, some pajamas for tonight and a set of clothes for your interview tomorrow. I promise the undies haven’t been worn before and the pink top will make your boobs pop, your handsome boss won’t be able to turn you down.” She teased, with a mischievous smile, while wiggling her eyebrows at me. I chuckled at her antics, while taking the clothes, before thanking her. I headed to the bathroom and took a quick shower, before changing into the pajamas. I got out of the bathroom and said goodnight to Samantha. I went into my room and closed the door behind me. I let out a deep sigh of relief, feeling grateful for the kind people in the world, like Samantha. If it wasn’t for her, who knows where I would be sleeping tonight? It didn’t take long before sleep consumed me. At some point in the middle of the night, I shot up in bed completely drenched in sweat. My heart was racing a mile a minute and I was having a hard time catching my breath. I had a nightmare, but it felt so familiar that I wasn’t sure if it was just a dream or a memory from my past. All I remember was a man pinning me down with my arms trapped above my head. I screamed and tried to break free, but couldn’t. His face was blurred, so I couldn’t see him clearly. His voice sounded sinister when he spoke and I was definitely afraid of him in my dream. He kept saying “mine” as he groped my body. I lay in bed awake for the rest of the night, unable to fall back asleep. My mind went over all the details of the dream. I was brought out of my thoughts when my alarm sounded. I rolled over and turned it off, I looked at the clock and saw that it was 5:00am. I wanted to get up extra early so that I wouldn’t be rushed. The coffee shop was only a fifteen-minute walk from Samantha’s place. I pushed the dream to the back of my mind and climbed out of bed. Samantha had already left for work, I noticed that she had left a new toothbrush on the bathroom counter for me. I wasted no time brushing my teeth and washing my face. I tied my hair up in a messy bun before throwing on the black leggings and pink tank top. I looked myself over in the mirror, Samantha was right, my boobs look good in this top. There’s cleavage showing, but not enough to make it inappropriate. It’s just a coffee shop, after all, the other employees were all dressed casually, so I should fit right in. I turned to look at my back in the mirror and I noticed a tattoo right below my hairline. It was black writing, but it wasn’t in English. I couldn’t make out what it said. I thought that was strange, but I didn’t have time to think too much about it, I needed to get going. Once I was dressed and ready, I headed for the door. I saw a note with a fob and a key. The note was from Samantha and it said the keys were for the apartment. I grabbed the key and fob and left the building. The walk to the coffee shop went by fast. It was easy to get distracted by people watching. Most people were dressed in business attire and looked to be heading to work. I got to the coffee shop and walked it. Brad was behind the counter prepping for the day. There was another woman working with him. She looked to be around 23, with long brown hair. She was around 5’9 and had a curvy body. “Good morning Brad.” I said with a smile, drawing Brad’s attention to me. His eyes met mine and a big smile grew on his face. “Hey Jessica, or do you prefer, Jess?” Brad asked. I don’t even know, I hadn’t thought about it. I hesitated for a second, before answering. “Either work's for me.” I replied, with a smile and a shoulder shrug. “Jess, it is. Come on, let go take a seat over there.” He said and pointed to a table in the corner, while he walked over. I followed him and took a seat across from him. “So Jess, what’s your work experience like?” He asked while looking at me curiously. “Umm, well, I don’t really have any. I was busy focusing on school and didn’t have time to work. I just moved here and I really need a job.” I lied, but I really need this job and it was just a little white lie. “Well the job isn’t difficult, I’m sure you would pick it up quickly. I’m looking for someone who doesn’t mind, opening the coffee shop in the mornings at 6:00am and can work Monday to Friday. Does that schedule work for you?” He asked, with a smile and my mouth opened in surprise at his words. “Umm absolute, I don’t mind any of that.” I said truthfully. “Ok great, can you start tomorrow?” He asked. “Yes.” I practically squealed out of excitement. “Great, come in a 5:30am and I’ll show you, what you need to know.” He said, his smile never leaving his face. “I can’t thank you enough, thank you, thank you, thank you.” I squealed and couldn’t help, but reach over and hug him. I pulled away when I realized what I had done. “Oh, sorry about that, I guess I got a little too excited. I said, with embarrassment. “I’ll never turn down a hug.” He said, with a chuckle and a wink. I couldn’t help but blush, I couldn’t believe, I had just hugged him. “Well Jess, the morning rush is about to hit. I’ll see ya bright and early tomorrow.” He said as he stood up. “I’ll be here, see ya tomorrow.” I replied with a big smile, before leaving the coffee shop. I couldn’t help but smile, the entire walk home. I was feeling so good about getting a job.
