the calm before the storm

Anna POV I woke up unusually early, a dull headache pulsing at the back of my skull. Sleep had eluded me despite going to bed early the night before. First, I finished a quick review for next week’s exam, then tried reading, but my mind refused to focus. Frustrated, I showered, got ready for bed again—but still, sleep didn’t come. My thoughts kept circling around Leon and Jason. Even now, in the quiet of the morning, I couldn’t escape them. They had probably slept like stones, confident and calm, while I felt like a tangled mess of nerves. I ran through every possible scenario of today’s meeting in my head. How would they act? How would I react? We had barely spoken as children, and now the Mate-Bond pulsed between us stronger than ever. But was it enough to build a real, healthy connection? It was still early, so I washed my hair, taking the time to style it properly. My long red-blonde hair shimmered straight down to my waist, refusing to curl no matter what I tried. Downstairs, the smell of coffee greeted me. My mother was already in the kitchen, sipping her cup. “Why are you up so early, Mom?” I asked, rubbing my eyes. “It’s almost nine. Want pancakes for breakfast?” Apparently, I had spent over an hour lost in thought, consumed by the looming meeting with the twins. Breakfast was long, filled with pancakes, bacon, and conversation with my parents. Then it was time to get ready: tights, a denim skirt, a crisp white blouse, green coat, brown boots. The pack house was a little way from my parents’ home, so I opted to bike. The autumn air was crisp, the leaves rustling around me, and my favorite music filled my ears, slowly easing the knot of anxiety in my chest. I should be happy. I had found my Mates. They wouldn’t be tyrants like Peter… right? Leon & Jason POV Leon and Jason sat side by side at the kitchen counter, exhaustion written across their faces. Both had slept poorly, minds tangled with thoughts of Anna. “Do you think she forgave us for yesterday?” Jason asked, voice tight with anxiety. Leon shrugged, calm but tense. “I don’t know… but she is our Mate. The bond doesn’t lie.” Jason’s face twisted with guilt. “Yeah… but we weren’t exactly saints as teens. We mostly ignored her, distracted by other things.” Leon’s gaze softened, yet remained sharp. “The fact that she hugged us yesterday, even while angry, is a good sign. She didn’t push us away.” Both alphas were lost in thought, replaying every detail of her reactions, every flicker of her emotions. They had waited so long to find Anna. They would not ruin it now. Leon’s mind wandered to why she might hold back from fully committing. He needed to understand today. To show her she was safe. Loved. Unconditionally. Jason clenched his fists, remembering the flash of another man touching Anna. His wolf growled low in his chest. She belongs to us. No one else. Yet he restrained himself. A glance between the twins was enough to communicate silently: We protect her. Together. Leon exuded calm, unwavering devotion; Jason, a fierce, burning intensity. Together, they formed a wall Anna didn’t yet see, a protection she didn’t know she needed. “We need to be careful today,” Leon said finally. “She knows we’re her Mates now. No wild moves. We talk, show her we’re here, and convince her to become our Luna.” Jason nodded, jaw tight. “She’s going to be a challenge. Stubborn. Fiery… like us.” Leon’s lips curved into a faint smile. “Exactly why I waited so long for her.” The energy Anna radiated buzzed in the room, electric and overwhelming. She was about to step through the door, and even imagining it made their hearts race and senses sharpen. Everything they had done wrong as teenagers felt meaningless. Only she mattered now. Jason laid a hand on Leon’s shoulder, a silent vow passing between them. “Nothing goes wrong today. We don’t lose her.” Leon’s eyes fixed on the door, imagining Anna standing there—her long red-blonde hair, her scent of roses and jasmine, the soft, hesitant smile she would offer. No. This time, we never let her go. Suddenly, a soft chime of the doorbell echoed through the house. Time had stopped. Both twins tensed, hearts hammering. They exchanged a look that said everything: Here she comes… and nothing will ever be the same again.
