Logan POV
I bounded downstairs full of energy, and in a good mood, even after spotting my mother sitting at the dining table. "Father still on his business trip?" I asked, rifling through the cupboards and grabbing my favorite pop tarts.
My mother's mouth flattened. She did not look pleased, her blue eyes icy but then again she never looked pleased. "Yes" she snarled "he's still on his trip" she snapped "and not likely to be home until the end of the week."
I wondered which pack he had gone to this time. I had wanted to go but when I had suggested it after all, wasn't it time I started to learn about my alpha responsibilities, he had quickly nixed my idea, stating it wasn't quite time for me to learn just yet. I supposed I had learned quite a lot at home but I loved to travel because it meant being away from my mother who tended to be quite a homebody. I sighed. Maybe he would take me next time.
My mother looked at my plate with disgust as I piled it high with pop tarts and brought it to the table.
"You do know we have omegas to serve us" she growled.
I shrugged. "I can just as easily grab it myself and it's quicker" I pointed out.
Besides, as I glanced around, all the omegas were busy grabbing stuff for Mother or the other pack members sitting at the dining table. I was hardly about to disturb them when I could grab my own breakfast.
My mother grimaced at me. "Do try to act more like an Alpha's son will you" she muttered "It's embarrassing when you act like a commoner" she hissed.
I rolled my eyes, biting into my pop tart and almost moaning at the creamy caramel flavor. Today was a school development day so I didn't have to worry about going to school.
My mother delicately bit into her own breakfast, an egg white omelet, nibbling at it and sipping at her flat white coffee. She scrunched up her nose and squinted at me. "What are your plans for today?" she asked me.
I looked at her hopefully, my own blue eyes twinkling "I was hoping to walk down to the lake with Marcus today" I said and she sighed.
"I guess it's lucky that you've finally shifted and before you've turned sixteen," she said proudly.
I shifted uncomfortably on my chair. I had shifted the other week when the full moon had been out, the pain so excruciating I thought I might be dying, only to turn into a giant black wolf, very similar to my father's type. Normally wolves shift when they are sixteen, but my father had shifted earlier and I too had done the same to my mother's excitement. She believed that I would be stronger than an ordinary Alpha because of this, whereas I thought of myself as merely strong, keen to keep a close eye on the pack and protect my pack members.
"So can I go?" I asked even though I was certain she would say yes. She was hardly going to deny her Alpha son.
"Of course" she cooed "but be careful and keep an eye out for rogues" she instructed me. I rolled my eyes.
I grinned and nodded my head, tucking into my pop tarts with zeal. I couldn't wait to get out of the house. I would have mind-linked Marcus but he hadn't shifted yet, being only fifteen and an ordinary wolf so I waited until I was finished and then placed my plate and mug in the sink, before heading outside and toward his house.
It was a beautiful day outside, the sun was shining, birds were flying overhead and I could hear the sounds of birds chirping in the wind. I grinned. It was a great day to go to the lake and swim. I jogged over to Marcus's house, and knocked on the door loudly, waiting patiently for him to answer it. The door opened with a loud creak, and his head poked out, his brown eyes blinking at me, his brown curly hair disheveled, his face confused as he stared at me, yawning loudly as though he had just woken up. "What's up man," he said tiredly.
Yeah, he had definitely just gotten up, I thought with a smile. Marcus was definitely not what one would call a morning person. I put my hands in my pockets and gave him a wicked grin. "Wanna go to the lake?" I asked eagerly.
A slow smile spread on his face. "Yeah man" he whooped "no school today. But we gotta take drinks and food" he complained.
I eyed him. "Dude we have omegas for that" I reminded him. Okay I know, I don't like using omegas but for this one occasion, I was going to make an exception. I mind-linked a particularly nice one called Sarah and asked her to organize an esky full of food and drinks to be brought down to the lake for us and a few others, knowing the girls would probably swing by.
Marcus looked envious as I glanced over at him, breaking the mind link.
"I wish I could mind-link," he said miserably "That would be so cool."
"When you shift buddy," I told him, clapping him on the shoulder.
He brightened "My birthday is in a few weeks," he said cheering up.
I winked "I know."
He opened the door wider and came outside, clad in a pair of dark grey sweatpants and a light grey tank top. His arms were heavily muscled and his skin was a golden-tanned color from being outdoors all the time. He came down the porch steps and joined me on the grass. His feet were bare. "Don't you need shoes man?" I asked.
He shook his head "Nah, I hate shoes" he told me bluntly.
Marcus never wore shoes if he could help it. He went barefoot everywhere, except at school and that's only because they forced him to. I never understood his aversion to it, but hey if that's what he wanted who was I to judge? I shrugged. His feet must be tough as hell because he never even winced as we began to walk into the forest.
"So how's school going?" I asked Marcus.
He sighed. "Football's the only good thing about it," he said glumly "my grades suck. I'm failing almost everything."
I grimaced. I knew Marcus wasn't exactly the brightest tool in the shed but I hadn't realized his grades were almost nonexistent. He was excellent at football though and was one of the main players.
"Let's talk about something else," he said hastily.
"Okay," I shrugged "like what man?"
"Well," said Marcus with a twinkle in his eye "what about the local w***e house at the pack?"
I sputtered. My face turned bright red. Marcus was laughing gleefully. I shot him a glower. He had to be messing with me. This was a prank of some kind. A joke. I was going to kill him for this. We didn't have a local w***e house in the pack and he knew it.
"Very funny Marcus," I said sarcastically as we stepped over a large fallen tree and wandered around a particularly large bush "Haha I'm laughing"
His face was serious as he looked at me "I'm not joking" he protested as we came to the lake and stopped in our tracks. I was relieved to see for once that it was empty, that none of the annoying high school girls were there, and we promptly began to take our shirts off, I took my shoes and socks off, placing them to the side, and sat down, placing my feet in the water, Marcus sitting beside me.
"Well, where the hell is this so-called house then?" I asked sarcastically.
A w***e house. I'd never heard of such a thing being in the pack house. Surely my father would have eradicated such a thing if he knew about it and he would know about it because he knew all the houses in the pack.
Marcus pointed to the south with his hand, a stoic expression on his face, his curls bouncing around his head "It's apparently on the outskirts" he whispered "like right on the edge of the pack lands. So that nobody sees anyone coming and going."
I frowned at him. "How do you know about all this then?"
He looked at me sheepishly. "Well, I heard my mother and father talking about it. Apparently, all sorts of people visit it, and not just from our pack either. Alphas and pack members come from other packs as well."
"No way, my father would know," I said "They're playing a joke on you," I said laughing and shoving him.
He shook his head. "They didn't know I was listening."
"Oh," I said grinning "and what does this w***e look like then? Is there more than one?"
He looked thoughtful. "They said her name is Clarissa and she has long purple hair with dark brown eyes. She has pale skin and a figure to die for" he exclaimed "and she's into real kinky shit."
"Language" I reminded him hastily and he rolled his eyes at me.
I frowned at that description. Why did it sound so familiar? "I feel like I've seen someone like that" I murmured, trying to picture it in my mind.
"You've probably seen her around town or something and not even realized it," Marcus said excitedly "I bet I have too. I'm gonna keep an eye out from now on" he added "and that's not all, she has a daughter as well."
"A daughter," I said slowly, feeling pity for the girl even though I didn't know anything about her yet.
"Yeah she's like thirteen or something," he said "and she looks like her mother, with long red and black hair and dark brown eyes. I heard she's a real beauty as well, just like her mother."
My eyes widened. Could Marcus possibly be talking about the young girl and her mother I had bumped into at the mall that time? The one I had apologized to? Surely not. She had seemed so nice and so sweet. The mother too.
I didn't want to hear anymore. I stood up, and dived into the lake, feeling the refreshing water around my body, my wolf purring in my mind as we broke to the surface, our hair slinging back as Marcus joined us in the water. He yelled in shock feeling how cold the water was and I stifled my laughter. "It's so cold" he yelled, shivering.
I splashed him as he shrieked. "You'll warm up" I grinned, swimming away as he went to yank my ankle.
I swam to the end and looked up, almost groaning out loud as I spotted Tiffany and her small group of friends coming into view in their bikinis. Tiffany was the head cheerleader at school and for some strange reason, she had set her sights on me, constantly trying to come onto me even though I wasn't interested in her at all. She had ice-blonde hair and cool blue eyes that reminded me of my mother. I shuddered as she gave me a wide smile, her pink bikini leaving nothing to the imagination.
"Logan" she trilled as I forced a fake smile onto my face not wanting to be rude "How lovely to see you here," she said.
"Tiffany," I said politely.
"Whatsup" Marcus called out, making Tiffany scowl at him. Neither of them liked the other but it didn't prevent Tiffany from pursuing me sadly.
Tiffany delicately placed a towel on the grass and began to lie down on it, putting sunglasses over her eyes. She looked at the water and gave a sigh. "Are you coming out anytime soon?" she called out, sounding a bit aggrieved.
I wondered why she was wearing a bikini if she wasn't going swimming. I lazily swam to the opposite side before answering her, "I'm going to swim for a bit."
She pouted, her friends swarming around her. "But it's ever so nice out here in the sun," she said, putting suntan lotion on.
Yeah, right, I'd rather swim, I thought to myself.
"I'll come out" Marcus offered.
"No thanks" snarled Tiffany.
I spotted several omegas placing two eskies beneath a large tree underneath the shade and waved at them, mouthing thank you. Tiffany whirled around, her eyes narrowing as she too saw the omegas. "How nice of you to say thank you to those beneath you," she said coldly.
"I believe in saying thank you to those who help me out," I said mildly, even as my wolf growled in my head, wanting to tear Tiffany to shreds. I quietened him down as best I could. Whoa, it was a pretty angry reaction coming from my wolf, considering it was just Tiffany. Maybe I should try to steer clear of her.
Tiffany sniffed. "It's their job," she said sarcastically.
"Doesn't mean you can't thank them" I growled.
She looked taken aback by my reaction and immediately backpedaled. "Of course Alpha" she retorted. I glared at her. She flushed and looked away.
I sighed, floating on my back and staring up at the sky. The others fell quiet, suntanning themselves while Marcus climbed out and did the same, drying himself. It was a hot enough day that it wouldn't take long to dry in the sun. I stiffened as I heard a scream in the distance. "Let go of me."
"Did anyone else hear that?" asked Marcus wide-eyed.
I growled, swimming to the other side and getting out. Before anyone could stop me, I shifted, and raced towards the sound, hearing the sound of a young girl shouting.
"Let go, I'm warning you."
I stopped in my tracks as I spotted the girl, the one from the mall, with red and black hair, standing in the forest, one large man grabbing her arm and trying to pin it behind her back. Her eyes were wide with fear and there were tears shimmering in her eyes. But there was also a look of defiance. I recognized the man. He was one of our pack members, but he was bad news. He'd been in trouble before, over his drug use and was an alcoholic. Father had punished him before and now here he was, stirring up trouble again, this time with an innocent girl.
"Come on, I bet your gonna be loads of fun. Like your mother" he growled, trying to put his hands on her.
She bucked, stomping her foot on his own, causing him to swear. She swung her free hand at his head, punching him hard and he released her in shock. Blood trickled down his forehead. I stared at the girl, stunned, admiring her fighting spirit. She put herself into a defensive stance, not running away, prepared to defend herself. I stayed where I was, waiting.
"You little b***h" he snarled, "you're going to pay for that."
She watched him, hands clenched into fists. He laughed. "You're no match for a wolf" he snarled.
He shifted. She took a step back, breathing heavily. She might have stood a chance against him as a human but I knew she wouldn't have a chance against him as a wolf. She didn't have her own yet. I bounded forward, growling lowly in my throat, stepping in front of the girl as she trembled behind me. The other wolf halted in his tracks. Roger, that was the man's name, I remembered. He stopped a horrified expression on his face. I snapped my jaws at him. He went to back away but I wouldn't let him, racing behind him. He whimpered, and I snarled. He shifted back to his human form. The young girl, what was her name, ah Alex, I remembered now, had watched this whole time without blinking. Roger held up his hands in surrender. I shifted back to human form.
"I was just playing young Alpha" he protested and I glared.
"You were attempting to do something far more sinister" I snarled remembering his hands on her. My wolf was in agreement, bloodthirsty, and ready to kill.
"Why do you care about a w***e?" snapped Roger.
The girl let out a small sob and I snapped. Before I knew what I was doing, I had flown towards him and lifted him bodily from the ground. I threw him directly towards a tree, roaring loudly, and heard the loud crack as his body hit it. I stalked towards him and lifted him over my knee, dropping him and breaking his back. I grabbed his neck and twisted it, effectively breaking it and killing him, and left his body in the grass for the animals to find, turning around to see Alex looking at me in wonder. My wolf was so damn protective of her and I didn't know why.
"Are you alright?" I asked her.
She bit her lip and nodded, looking pale. She wrapped her arms around herself. "He didn't get a chance to...to...to" she stammered and burst into tears.
I wrapped my arms around her and she clutched me crying. "I'm taking you home," I told her softly.
"You can't" she sobbed suddenly.
I blinked and grabbed her, lifting her off her feet. She shrieked and held on tight, "which way" I growled not giving her a choice.
She pointed south and I began to trudge in that direction, sniffing her scent. Why did she smell so similar to my own but different in a way? What was it about this girl that I would literally do anything for her? I wasn't romantically interested in her but I wanted to know more about her. Why did I have this instinct to protect her and why was my wolf ready to kill anyone who touched her or hurt her? These questions burned through my mind as I began to walk with her, still clutched securely in my arms.
