Chapter 5

Chapter 5 As desperate and eager as Ryker was to reproduce and bring their species back, he knew he had to wait until Rain had fully recovered from her ordeal. According to Golden Moon’s doctor, Rain was severely malnourished, and he advised against any extracurricular activities for the time being. When Rain heard this, she was anything but understanding. The doctor released her from the hospital, and she was placed in a room in the packhouse next to Ryker. Lanie was excited to hear that Rain was coming home and wanted to prepare a welcome feast for her; however, she didn’t know Rain’s tastes and didn’t want to make foods Rain might not enjoy. So, when Ryker brought Rain through the packhouse, Lanie took the initiative to ask Rain what she was in the mood for. “Rain, I’m so happy you’ve been released from the hospital. How are you feeling?” Lanie asked joyfully. “I’m better. Thank you, Lanie?” Rain replied, unsure if she remembered Lanie’s name correctly. Lanie nodded, confirming that Rain was correct. Rain smiled. “I wanted to prepare a welcome gift for you, and I thought we could have the kitchen staff prepare your favorite foods. Is there anything in particular that you like? Maybe a traditional dish from your home country?” Lanie asked carefully. Rain didn’t quite understand Lanie’s question and looked to Ryker for help. Ryker took out his phone, typed out Lanie’s message into the translation app, and then showed it to Rain. When she read it, she smiled happily and nodded. “In my country, there is dish called Yaohon,” Rain said. Ryker looked it up online and showed it to Lanie. “Oh, hot pot,” Lanie replied as she read the ingredient list. “Hmm, let me check with the kitchen staff and see if this is something we can make for you, Rain. If they can’t, then I know a very spunky Asian Luna who knows her way around Asian cuisine,” Lanie said, took a picture of Ryker’s phone with hers, and then raced off to the kitchen. “Asian Luna?” Rain asked Ryker. “Her name is Allie. She’s Korean and lives in Las Vegas.” “Werewolf?” Ryker nodded. “I miss home,” Rain said with a saddened expression. “How did you get out of Cambodia?” Ryker asked. “Bad man take me,” Rain answered. Ryker nodded. He deduced just from her answer that she had been trafficked from the get-go. “Where is your home?” Rain asked. “I was born in Russia, but I lived most of my life in America.” Rain nodded, partially understanding his response. “Did I hear you were born in Russia?” A familiar Russian accent suddenly echoed. Rain jumped in fright, while Ryker shielded her and growled, his tiger eyes shining. When they turned around, they saw Golden Moon’s new dark witch, Svetlana. “Svetlana!” Ryker shouted. “In the flesh,” Svetlana smiled. “What are you doing here?” “I heard we have a new tiger in the pack, and I wanted to introduce myself.” “She’s been here for days. Where have you been?” Ryker questioned. “Since when do I answer to you?” Ryker raised an eyebrow at her. “Whatever. If you must know, I was putting out fires with the counsel of dark witches. Figuratively speaking, of course.” Svetlana took a moment to study Rain. “She is beautiful.” Rain understood and blushed. “I was told she doesn’t speak English very well?” “I’m going to teach her,” Ryker replied. “Why waste time, you silly furball with stripes? I can just cast a spell on her,” Svetlana said. Before Ryker could object, Svetlana mumbled incoherently, waved her hand at Rain, tapped Rain’s forehead with her index finger, and a green spark flickered for a split second before vanishing. “What did you do?” Ryker questioned harshly. “I rewired her brain so she can speak English fluently,” Svetlana answered and smiled. Ryker furrowed his brows and looked down at Rain, who was shaking her head in delirium. “What the hell was that?” Rain questioned as she held her forehead. Ryker’s eyes widened when he heard her voice. She had perfect pronunciation. “Rain? Are you okay?” he asked her. “I’m fine, but what the f*ck did she just—Wait, why am I speaking in perfect English?” Rain questioned in shock. “Why do you furry folk never listen when I speak? I cast a spell on you so you can speak English. Now, you don’t have to waste time learning,” Svetlana said with pride in her tone. “What’s the catch?” Ryker interrogated. “There is none. I just wanted to help. Why is that so hard to believe?” Svetlana asked in return, offended at Ryker’s insinuation that she had an ulterior motive. “You’re a dark witch, Svetlana.” “Just because I am a dark witch does not immediately constitute that I am a bad person, Ryker.” “All dark witches are bad people,” Ryker spat. “Yes, well, I am the minority. I am reformed. Now, if you will excuse me, I am going to see my lyubov (love),” Svetlana said, referring to Richard, and excused herself. Ryker rolled his eyes and shook his head. “You can’t be mad at her, Ryker. She just helped us. Now we can communicate freely without you having to use your phone to translate everything for me,” Rain said happily. Ryker internally admitted that Rain was right. Although he still had his reservations about Svetlana, he couldn’t deny that she had been helpful in more ways than one ever since Richard took her as a chosen mate. “Svetlana has done a lot of good things for us recently,” another voice sounded behind them. They turned around yet again. “Oh, J, it’s you,” Ryker greeted and hugged her. Rain’s tiger side came out as she snarled at J. “Whoa, there!” Ryker immediately had her stand down. “She’s like a daughter to me, Rain. She was held captive with me when I was trafficked,” Ryker quickly explained. Rain reeled in her tiger side. “Oh,” Rain responded and lowered her head with remorse. “Don’t worry about it, Rain. We’re all a little possessive of our mates. Well, everyone except for me, that is,” J said. “Why?” Rain asked. “I’m still trying to deal with everything that happened to me. But Maverick has been wonderfully patient with me,” J answered. “I guess we all have that in common,” Rain responded. “I don’t know if Ryker told you or not, but he, Lanie, Lexie, and I are very close because we were all held captive together. Ryker was our protector in captivity,” J enlightened as she spoke highly of Ryker. Rain couldn’t help but smile and look at Ryker with admiration, hearing that he was a natural protector. “You said your name is J?” Rain asked for clarification. “Yeah. My name is actually Jennifer, but I prefer to go by J.” “It’s nice to meet you,” Rain genuinely said. “It’s nice to meet you, as well,” J shook Rain’s hand. “I’m actually the Gamma female of the Golden Moon pack, and I was actually coming down to let you know your room is ready. We had every cleaned, and the Omega staff just finished putting on clean sheets on the bed. If you’re tired or would like to rest, you’re more than welcome to go up. Your room is right next to Rykers. Unfortunately, your room doesn’t have a bathroom attached to it, but you can always use the community bathroom down the hall, or if Ryker doesn’t mind sharing his…” “She will share mine,” Ryker replied on Rain’s behalf. “She’s my mate after all. Her sleeping separately from me is only temporary.” Rain smiled when she heard his. “Cool! It all works out then. Maverick wanted me to let you know that when you’re ready to live together, we can move you guys to a bigger room in the packhouse, or you can live in one of the cottages within the territory.” “Thank you, J,” Rain and Ryker replied in unison. J smiled and left. “Everyone is so friendly,” Rain complimented. “That they are. Even with everything that has happened to them, they never allowed the darkness to consume them.” “Why was J trafficked?” “She’s what’s known as a Jade Wolf.” “I’ve never heard of a Jade Wolf.” “They’re a rare form of a werewolf that is born with their wolf counterpart. They can shift from infancy, and most, if not all, Jade wolves have powers.” “I see. What about Lanie and Lexie?” “Their story is one for the books. Their souls were stolen from the Lunar Kingdom. They’re born directly from the werewolf Goddess.” Rain’s eyes bulged out of her head in surprise. “They’re goddesses?” Rain asked as she looked back toward the kitchen, knowing that’s where Lanie was currently. “They were.” “Ryker, now that we can understand each other fully, would you mind telling me your story?” “I don’t mind at all. I think it would be best if we went to your room and spoke privately.” Rain nodded, and Ryker led her away.
