Chapter 78 Lanie watched as Etta lost her sanity. The sound of her sobs echoed against the smooth surfaces of the hospital room. Her heart monitor kept its desperate, mechanical beeping until Mavercik reached over and turned it off. The silence was an oppressive, soundless curtain drawn over the end of the argument. “You’re done, Etta,” Lanie said, her voice completely devoid of any emotion. Yes, she originally felt sorrow and sympathy for Etta’s loss, but at the end of the day, Etta’s complacency had gotten her into this mess in the first place. “You can curse at us and blame us for our part in this; that’s fine.
