The News
(Maya’s POV)
The sound of my phone broke the quiet of the morning. I was at the kitchen table, reviewing notes for class when Stella’s name flashed across the screen.
“Hello?”
“Maya!” Her voice was breathless. “Are you home?”
“Yes. What’s wrong?
“Can I come over? I’m coming over.”
“What? Stella, what happened?”
“Just make tea. I can be there in twenty minutes. Send me your address.”
“Okay, I’ll see you soon.”
Then the line went dead.
I stared at the phone, uneasy. Stella didn’t sound like herself. She sounded furious. My chest tightened, and before I could stop myself, I thought of Axel. I hoped he was alright.
I tidied the living room, straightened a few papers, and boiled water for tea. Twenty minutes felt like an eternity.
