Josephine stood up with a trembling body and a deathly pale face. Her palms felt spicy, hot, and throbbing. She was shocked, because her slap was not at all like slapping a human.
It was as if she had slapped a stone wall, for Nicholas' cheeks felt hard and stiff. Instead of the force of Josephine's slap making Nicholas move, she staggered himself.
Nicholas's eyebrows rose. He held his cheek that had just been slapped by Josephine. Not out of pain, but out of shock. Why did Josephine slap him? The woman staggered and Nicholas grabbed her hand to keep her from falling.
