Chapter Eleven - Almost

✩Dawn✩ I am on a mission. I am not here to fall in love. I am on a mission. Find out all and any information. That was my job, my very first mission. I could not mess this up. I am not here to fall in love. I needed to stop the growing feelings I had been developing for Blake. He was manipulative and he played me. Granted, he had done a fabulous job of it. However, after the incident with that girl, I knew I had to get my head in the game and my heart out of it. “Hey, where you off too?” Bailey asked me as she sat up. I didn’t bother answering her as I pulled open the door and left the room. I am on a mission. Let’s do this! I didn’t bother sneaking around the hallways as I had done before. No, this time I went directly to Blake’s office. As per usual, the doors were wide open. I went inside and looked around. The room was dark but the moonlight that shone through the large window provided enough light for me to look around. I already knew that there was nothing of importance at the desk. I went over to the bookcase. I remembered Blake had come from here. It must be a secret door or something. I pulled at books, I pulled at the frame put nothing seemed to work. How the hell did he come in then? I paused as I studied the bookcase. “Puzzle me this, how do you open?” I muttered. “Open sesame!” I whispered out. I pushed my hands up against the bookcase and when I heard a soft click sound, I quickly stepped back. “Well, hello there,” I pulled open the secret door a bit more and glanced inside. It was pitch black and I couldn’t see much. I pushed my fear aside and entered the space. I blinked my eyes rapidly, trying to adjust to the dark but it was no use. “Oh, the flame of light, please guide my way,” I said. Suddenly my good old friend, a ball of light, appeared in the palm of my hand. I smiled as I released the ball and took in my surroundings. I was standing in a small area and I could now see a downward spiral staircase. I glanced back over my shoulder and then sighed. I should probably close the secret door, just in case. I could see a small silver handle on the inside, and I used it to pull the secret door closed. Alright, here we go. I slowly made my way down the staircase. When I finally reached the bottom, I was surprised to find a large open area. I wasn’t sure what I had been expecting but this was starting to get interested. Four arches led to four different areas. I decided to start at the first one, on my left. This archway had led me to what seemed to be a bedchamber of sorts. A large king-sized bed filled the middle of the room and on the right-hand side stood a sofa. A desk and chair on the left and oh look! Another door. I didn’t want to think about why there was a bedchamber down here as I walked across the room and opened the door. It was a fully functioning bathroom. Alright, moving on. I left that room and went through archway number two. This one led me to what looked like another office. The stone walls were covered from floor to ceiling with books. It was quite impressive. Maybe it was more of a library. In the middle of the room stood an exceptionally large black stained oak desk with a bunch of chairs around it. Ok, did they have meetings here? I had no idea what to think as I closed my eyes. I couldn’t possibly scan all of these books myself. “Research and knowledge, I call you to me, check all these books!” I opened my eyes and smiled. Not only had another ball of light appeared but I could see books being opened and closed at quite an alarming rate. Good, my invisible friends would be done soon enough. I left the library and went through the third archway. This room wasn’t as big as the bedchamber or library and I knew that this was where they had their meetings. There was nothing else except for the large table with chairs. I left the boring conference type room and went through the last archway. The room wasn’t all that big, but I immediately knew that this was where all the important documentation, all the important files were kept, and I smiled. Bingo. Finally, I had hit the jackpot. I didn’t bother using any magic as I started taking out files and going through the contents. Budgets. Deeds. Birth certificates. Death certificates. Boring stuff but I took pictures of anything I deemed important or interesting. File after file and I was still going at it. When I came across a file of all the dragon factions, I smiled. I took my time in taking pictures of this file. It was huge and I learned way more than I had ever thought about dragons, their kind, and how their factions worked. It would seem that this faction, Blake’s faction had a history of horrendous violence and crime. It should not have shocked me, yet I was surprised at my findings. Blake may be a cheating lying snake of a dragon, but I had not thought him to be violent and vicious. However, it was clear to me now that I knew nothing. It made my heartache, but I pushed those feelings of disappointment down and concentrated on gathering whatever other information I could. I knew that it would be time soon for me to head back. When I was finished with the file, I hurried back to the library and called back my magic. I needed to get out of here before I got caught. Now that I knew where everything was, I could come back. I wouldn’t be able to do all of this in one night. I made sure that I hadn’t left any evidence of my presence and hurried up the stairs. I was just about to push open the secret door when I heard a noise from the other side. My heart stopped as I held my breath. Who would be up so early? I pressed my ear against the door and said a quick spell to help me hear better. “This is pathetic!” I heard Kayne suddenly hiss out and I held onto my phone tighter. “No, it isn’t,” Blake said. “What’s pathetic is that these women don’t seem to understand that I am not interested,” “So, you want to fire every single female and hire only males?” Kayne asked and I frowned. Did this mean what I thought it did? “Exactly. My heart belongs to Dawn, no other can have me,” “But what about Bailey?” “What about her?” I could tell that the two were not seeing eye to eye on this, but I couldn’t stop myself from listening in. I should leave, find another way out, but I couldn’t. I wanted to hear what Blake had to say. His heart belonged to me. My earlier thoughts seemed to fade away as I allowed those feelings of love to return. “I really like her,” Kayne argued, and I smiled. I knew for a fact that she really liked him too. “I know, she can stay here with Bailey, but the rest has got to go,” Blake responded, and I had to wonder how truthful that file really was. Right now, Blake didn’t sound like an angry dragon ready to unleash hell upon the world. “Oh, well…then go ahead and do what you must,” Kayne said with a laugh and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. “Thank you for your permission,” I heard Blake playfully say. “You are welcome,” Kayne said before I heard footsteps leaving the office. Just one set, which meant either Kayne or Blake was still in the office and I bet my money on Blake. It was silent for a few moments and I started to panic. If Blake found me here, I would have to reveal who I really am and why I am here. I couldn’t allow that to happen. I quickly went back down the staircase and sighed. What the hell was I going to do? I could hide but then what and for how long? ✩Blake✩ I had a plan. A good one and I sat down behind my desk as I waited for Josephine. She would not be happy about my request, especially since I had just ordered her to hire more help. I didn’t even know if there were any male helpers, but I was done with all of this. Never had I ever felt guilty about my frolicking around, until now. I was dedicated to being with Dawn and my dragon and I both agreed she is the one. Now, the females in the castle still want to frolic around and I can’t have that. I tried rejecting them, but they had somehow made themselves believe we were in love. Love?! No, the only one I love is Dawn. “What?” I said out loud. Ah, but it was true. I was in love with Dawn. One hundred percent and that is why I am prepared to go to any extreme measures to prove my love and eliminate any threats of any kind. I knew I would have to tell her about my past, and I was already dreading that moment. However, she had to know. I refused for us to have any secrets. Honesty was and always would be the best way to go in any kind of relationship. I knew that Dawn would become my bride and that was another reason why I knew I had to change things around here. “My Lord?” I glanced up to see Josephine hovering by the door. “Come in,” she hurried inside and quickly sat down on the chair across from the desk. “I am sorry for asking you to meet with me so early, but I have some important changes I would like to enforce it as soon as possible,” I informed her. I could tell that she was immediately interested as she leaned forward. I decided not to point out that she was still wearing her big fluffy orange robe. “What changes?” she questioned. “With the exception of Bailey and Dawn, I want every single female employee to be let go,” I said clearly. “Does that include me?” she asked breathlessly, and I shook my head. “Alright, may I ask why? Is it because of your…” “My frolicking around, as you so politely put it the last time,” I said with a smile. She flushed a dark shade of red and I cringed at the red face against the bright orange. “Right, well, you did ask me to hire more help and so far, I’ve enlisted four males. Since we are going to let all of the women go-” “Except Dawn and Bailey,” I quickly interrupted her. “Yes, yes of course, except those two. Then that means I will have to hire a lot more help, my Lord,” “Do what you need to do,” I said clearly. “And hurry up about it, my frolicking around is not doing me any favors,” I added. Josephine nodded before she stood up. “Of course, I will get right on it,” she said before she hurried from the office. I smiled and relaxed in my seat. With all the females out of the way, I wouldn’t be constantly reminded of my past antics and frolics. I chuckled as I stood up and headed to the secret door of the bookcase. I had a meeting with the Seniors later today and I needed to do some last-minute work preparation. The door opened and as soon as I stepped into the small space, I knew that someone was down there. I closed the door behind me and slowly made my way down the staircase. Whoever it was, wasn’t welcome. I couldn’t pick up any scent or anything other than the fact that the air felt disturbed. That was the only give away that someone was down here. I stepped into the large area and looked around. It was dark but I could see it clearly. I snipped the air but again, I picked up on nothing. I searched in the rooms, but I didn’t find anyone. When I pulled open the door in the conference room, I felt something. I growled out as I realized it was magic. I could feel it, I could taste it and I hated it. Whoever had been here was a witch or warlock. I rushed up the stairs and pushed open the secret door. It led to a closet and I scanned the small space. Nothing. I pushed open the door and stepped out into the hallway. I didn’t see anyone running away and I sighed. I knew that when Kayne suggested putting in a security system, I should’ve listened. However, it was never too late to make more changes. I closed the closet door and rushed down the hallway towards the dining room. Breakfast would be served soon, and I already knew that was exactly where I would find Kayne. ✩Dawn✩ My heart was still pounding when I entered the kitchen. Those that were busy preparing breakfast for Blake and whoever else gave me a brief look before continuing with their work. I hadn’t been able to leave that dungeon of a place the way I had entered but thank the lucky stars I had found that staircase that led up to a closet. I was able to get away and I somehow just knew that it had been a close call. I would have to be a lot more careful and alert the next time. “Where the hell have you been?” Bailey asked me as I rushed up to her. “I saved you breakfast but you’ll have to eat fast,” she said as she pointed over at the microwave. I nodded as I quickly took out the plate and started shoveling in the fried sausage and scrambled eggs. It was cold but I didn’t care. I was still shaky at almost being caught. “Dawn!” I nearly dropped the plate when Josephine called out my name. “Serve the Lord his breakfast,” she instructed, and I hurried to put the plate down and rush over to wear the trolly had been filled with their morning breakfast. I pushed the trolly towards the double doors and sighed. This was going to be one hell of a day. “I’m telling you; a witch had been down there!” I heard Blake say to Kayne and I paused for a second to neutralize my face and emotions. “Or a warlock?” “Whichever, it doesn’t matter, whoever it was masked their scent!” “Good morning,” I said as I approached the table. Kayne smiled politely while Blake beamed at me happily. “Good morning Dawn,” he greeted. I quickly served them and hurried off before he could say or do anything else. I wouldn’t be able to sneak down there again. Since Blake knew of the intrusion, he would take precautions. At least the information I had gathered was quite a lot. Later today I would send everything to Cora. Maybe then this mission would be over. What was going to do when it was?
