CHAPTER EIGHT Aaron knew he was in for it during a parent-teacher conference when Logan's sixth-grade teacher, Ms. Dean, looked at him over her glasses and just sighed heavily. "Mr. Morrison," Ms. Dean began, "you're aware of your son's behavior lately, I'm sure." "He's my nephew." "Well, you're his primary guardian, correct?" Aaron nodded. He'd resisted taking on the title of father for Logan and Pen because it felt like a betrayal to Jason. Jason was their dad, not Aaron. Aaron was just the replacement that didn't quite fit. "Logan is obviously a smart kid. Too smart, probably," said Ms. Dean. "Can someone be too smart?" "When school isn't difficult for certain kids, they can act out.
