Chapter 29: Caught between a rock and a hard place.

1932 Words
Kai The two days I had asked from my parents to think about their proposal were coming to an end that Friday evening. Lynn was smelling a rat about my sudden change of attitude and I didn't know what to do with my life. That was my situation. They were basically asking me to leave sure, legit happiness and go for the unknown. Just like walking in a dark room with no idea what kind of an animal awaits or who will hit the back of your head first. They made me think of just biting Lynn and turning her into a werewolf so she could have an upper hand against this said girl. And the war was coming? Dad had no idea how long I had been waiting to get my hands on luca. War or no war I had to hunt down Luca and kill him which proves their point. To do that I needed a pack, an army and Lynn, she was human. You can't bring beauty to a war of claws, strength, speed, fangs and pure brutality. But at the same time she was unmatched. And not just because she somehow made me fall asleep. Since we met there had been a few tiny changes in my life that even with a billion dollars I couldn't have realized. I felt good about myself and those around me brought me a tinge of joy. Most of my time I spend doing something constructive instead of running in the woods in my wolf form. my life was meaningful. "Boss" Arthur said coming from behind. I was standing on the roof top of the Watson towers with a bottle of Hennessy am a glass, under the shade of a huge umbrella with my packet of cigarettes on a stool. Arthur and anyone who knew me so well, which is Arthur only, could tell I was in a foul mood. "Anything I can help?" He asked going past me to look at the traffic. "What do you know about love?" I asked blowing a puff of smoke and galloping a half glass of whiskey down my aching throat. "Ooh this is about love" He said turning around to face me, "you know a few weeks back I never imagined you'll be this miserable" "Don't forget I pay your salary Arthur!" I growled ruffling my hair backwards. Despite my unappreciative behavior he stuck by me. Stood there like a stone not making eye contact. Arthur was like a brother to me and I hated keeping things from him. But honestly, he had no experience with love. I had never seen him with a girl and we never talked about his relationships. "Am kind of in the middle of a love crisis...it's a matter of choice" I said leaving my seat, almost missed a step there but I regained my composure before Arthur caught me and I smiled to assure everything was okay. "You're the most decisive person I know" "Well, this is tough. My parents have found me a spouse and she is a witch" Arthur chuckled lightly. That's the downside of seeming like you have everything in control, when you need the help they might think you're joking. "Since when do you listen to your parents?" "Their proposal makes sense Arthur. My wife has to be a special, you know what I mean. If am to find and kill Luca, build a pack in that matter I need what they are offering" "But you have to lose what you think is best for you simply because she is human?" "Not the time to show solidarity for your kind Arthur. I don't know what to do man and Lynn has stated suspecting me" "Am sure you guys aren't so deep in it and your insomnia is slowly healing so the best thing to do is to break up whatever you guys have before it's too late" That was the easiest way out to save both of us but I didn't want to think about it. And I didn't have the courage to end things like how could I just walk up to her tell her our casual s*x, friends with benefits thing we had going was over? She was definitely going to believe I used her as an emotional support animal. "Any other way? I can't go with that" "Then Act normal around her as you figure out what to do with their proposal. Am sure you have enough time to think it through" "I asked for two days and they end tonight" "Who the f**k asks for two days to think of marrying a total stranger?" "Someone who didn't know how much he likes having Lynn around, take me for that spin!" I ordered walking away. **** As much as I hated lying,Lynn was waiting for an explanation on why I sneaked out that morning and left her a note instead. It was not work based and there was no clear explanation. I didn't have a billion dollars in my account to wake up that early after months of trying to find sleep. "Hi, good evening" I said happily when she picked up. "Hi sneaker" she said mockingly amid laughter. How adorable was she? How did she manage to stay that cool even when she didn't have to? "Am sorry, something came up. There was security breach in one of our warehouses it needed my attention and I didn't want to wake you up. Forgiven?" "Yeah we're now even. Looks like Arthur is sleeping on the job huh, you can always hire me" "Ooh, and what do you know about security?" "Taekwondo, karate and how to shoot long range" "You're crazy" "You need the help, anyway I want you to know that am here for you in case something else apart from your warehouse being robbed is eating you up, you can always talk to me" "Thank you, but there is nothing eating me up at the moment" "It's goodnight I guess, we had movie night yesterday already" "Yeah, Goodnight" I said and hang up then angrily smashed the phone on the wall. There was a tinge of doubt and disappointment in her voice and it was killing me. The housekeeper came in looking concerned. She took one look at me and went in the kitchen to fetch a dustpan, swept the tiny glass pieces of my phone and left in silence. I was so angry at myself for not being fair to her. "The car is ready sir" Arthur said coming in. "Good, am going to need another phone" I said marching past him. "What happened to the one you had?" He asked rhetorically. After playing hide and seek with my parents for long I was finally going to give them an answer. And up until that moment I got in the car, I had no definite answer. A part of me wanted to go and tell them to mind their own business and let me choose a mate for myself and another one was grateful to have such parents who would want to leave me in safe hands, with a spouse that can protect me. Either way that evening a decision had to be made. The city was looking beautiful under the glow of a thousand lights. The roads were busy but the traffic was moving. I was seated in the back seat of the silvery V8 leaning on the window with desperation. Younger and dumber me thought being an alpha was fun, but now it turned out being an alpha meant that everything you did, the interest of the pack had to come first. And it didn't matter if you were happy. "So what are planning to tell them?" Asked Arthur stealing a glance at me via the rear view mirror. "Do you think I should give it a try see how she is. Am sure I'll annoy her after a week or so and she will just give up" "Do you like Lynn?' "A lot, who doesn't like her?" "It sounds to me like you want to use her while dating this new witch girl. Lynn is understanding you can explain it to her" "No woman will accept what you're trying to say. For the moment I think am going to take both sides" "Good luck" "I need to know I can count on you" "Always Boss" The dinner table was set. This time with a lot of fruits and meat. I could smell goat meat from the gate all the way. Dad was seated at the head of the table ,a towel around his neck happily chewing meat, ripping it off the the bones. Mum was stealing glances at me and I was the only one not enjoying the well prepared meal. It was a shame. "So have you thought about our proposal?" Mum finally addressed the elephant in the room, we had avoided the topic like a plague while exchanging pleasantries. I bet the reason was to avoid ruining my appetite, which was ruined already. "Yes, that's why am here" I said holding back creating suspense that was already suffocating them. "I didn't want to talk about this but I'll just go ahead and say it" Dad said wiping the corners of his mouth with a towel, "You're like a prince, a werewolf prince and royalty doesn't marry for love, it's rare, they marry for power. Look at it this way, you'll be marrying from one of the powerful witch covens of all time. Your power and control of the supernatural community will increase tenth fold and when this war that's cooking up finally comes you'll have an entire coven at your disposal" "What your dad is trying to say is, you'll have something he didn't have, an army with which you'll use to hunt down the man who made us leave our homes and submit to weak humans loving in fear of never seeing the sunset, he made us forget our traditions and hide our true identity. Luca" Mum's psyche had blood boiling in my veins and all I could see is my mother getting shot in the head repeatedly, the screams of my pack members as they got butchered like mere chicken such powerful beings. Their screams wouldn't let me sleep and I felt that burden as the only person who could avenge them with my dad aging day by day. "My mind is made up already!" I said and kept chewing to take them to the edge of their seats. "We will support you, whatever you decide" "I want to give it a try, go on a couple of dates and get to know her better before I commit" You could feel them sigh some relief. Their heartbeats get to a more steady rate. Looked to me like they needed that union more than I did or they were just two parents concerned about their son's future. "Am proud of you son!" Dad said with pride. "I'll make arrangements tomorrow" "But there is a catch" There it was, a nail through their hopes and I enjoyed seeing it scatter after that prank they pulled on me. "Am still seeing Lynn" "Okay" mum said surprised. That was the beginning of my problems and and unending experience of powerlessness, regrets and dissapointment. But I couldn't see it that way. To me it was just another decision, not good not bad, just a decision that I had to make. Perhaps I should have known, no matter how strong and powerful one is, choices always have consequences.
