Third Person POV Sadie stared at her father, her hand placed against her throbbing cheek, while her wolf stood beside her snarling at her father She hadn't even done anything wrong, She had just wanted to touch her baby brother, who was now crawling everywhere. Ever since Stefan had been born, Sadie had been ignored, not just by her father, which was normal, but by her mother as well. But King Dominic considered her to be a threat to Stefan and had told her she was not to go near him. Tears welled in her eyes. She looked pleadingly at her mother but her mother looked away, avoiding her gaze. "Never, ever, touch your brother again" King Dominic snarled "Do you understand me?" he demanded, towering over her. Sadie blinked back the tears in her eyes. "Yes, Father" she whispered. "I can't hear you" he thundered, making her jump. "Yes, Father," she said louder. Gray growled. Her father glared at the wolf but made no comment. For some reason, Sadie had been allowed to keep the wolf she had saved in the forest when she was four years old. As time passed the two of them became inseparable to the point that they did everything together. Sadie was now six and devoted to Gray. King Dominic pursed his lips. He watched as his wife picked up their son and bounced him lightly on her lap as he cooed and giggled, Sadie's eyes watched as well, and Deidre felt her heartbreak for the poor child who was now ignored by both parents. Finally, the King turned to Deidre "Take her to go play with the servant children or something" he instructed impatiently. Sadie brightened. She'd never been allowed to play with the servant children before. Deidre was hesitant. "Are you sure Sire?" she asked carefully "Are you not worried about them finding out she is wingless?" she was confused. Were they no longer keeping that a secret? The King scoffed. "Who cares that she's wingless? She'll have to learn to live with the taunts and the bullying" he sneered "Her whole life will be filled with it." he said gruffly. Deidre wanted to disagree. She wanted to keep Sadie away from the cruelty that would befall her for as long as possible. But she was just a lowly servant and he was the king. She bowed her head, feeling defeated. "As you wish Your Highness," she said quietly. She took a gentle hold of Sadie's hand and lead her, and Gray, downstairs and outside, to the area where several young servant fae children played. Sadie's eyes were dancing as she looked at the small group of children. A young boy flew down and surveyed her, his blue eyes alight with curiosity. He c****d his head and then darted around her, looking confused. "Where are your wings?" he asked Sadie bluntly, "I was born without them," Sadie said quietly. The boy's eyes glimmered. He laughed at her, the other fae children also joining in. "She has no wings" howled the boy. "Stop it" shouted Deidre. The children stopped. "She is a princess and you will treat her as such" Deidre told them. The children eyed her with maliciousness. "What's your name?" asked the boy. "Sadie," she said shyly. "I'm Thorn" the boy declared, his red hair swept back, a broad grin on his face. "I'm Chelsea" "Andrea" "Sam" "Dean" The other children slowly introduced themselves, but it was Thorn that Sadie couldn't help looking at. He seemed to be roughly a year, maybe two older than her and he was handsome. Devilishly so. She couldn't stop staring at him. She blushed and saw Deidre eying her carefully. She spotted a ball on the ground, which the children must have been playing with. She pointed to it. "Are you playing with it?" she said. Thorn nodded. "We were throwing it to each other. I suppose you can join us" he said a bit ungraciously. He didn't like this girl with no wings. He'd been taught that such fae were pathetic, weakling creatures that should have been killed at birth. If it wasn't for Deidre he would have refused to play with her. Sadie beamed. Thorn glanced at Gray. The wolf's eyes narrowed at him. Thorn felt a moment of trepidation. "Your wolf has to sit by the sidelines," he snapped. Sadie glanced at Gray. She petted him again. "Go with Deidre, Gray," she said gently and the wolf whined at her, before turning and following Deidre to a nearby tree, where Deidre sat down with her legs folded and Gray sat down on his haunches. The others began to form a circle and she eagerly joined. Thorn smirked. He was willing to bet this girl had no powers. He gripped the ball tightly in his hand and then threw it, putting a gust of wind behind it, so that it hit Sadie hard in the face. She gave a small cry of pain. "Ouch" cried Sadie, even as she grabbed at the ball. She wouldn't have thought that Thorn would have that much strength. Deidre went to get up but Sadie shook her head at her. She didn't want Deidre to intervene. Sadie threw the ball to Chelsea who caught it easily. Chelsea threw it to Andrea, who threw it nicely to Sam who tossed it back to Thorn while Sadie almost got dizzy watching them. Thorn threw the ball again, using wind, this time harder, at Sadie, who failed to catch the ball in time. Tears welled in her eyes. Thorn let out a malicious laugh. "Is something wrong Sadie?" he gloated. He was enjoying tormenting the little girl. The other children were afraid of Thorn, for he was a bully and one that never got caught. Sadie rubbed her nose. She gave Thorn a look. Maybe she needed to watch a bit more carefully. But she was also feeling anger rise inside of her. She bit her lip and then threw the ball to Dean. They tossed the ball around and for the next few times, Thorn threw the ball nicely, getting Sadie to let down her guard. Sadie began to laugh and enjoy herself, her eyes sparkling as she played. Deidre, watching from the sidelines, felt disconcerted. She knew something was going to happen, but she didn't know what. She hovered, fidgeting with her hands while Gray nudged her shoulder and whimpered at her. He too was not happy, he wanted Sadie and he didn't like having to be with Deidre. Thorn got the ball again. This time before Sadie could register what he had done, he created a round wooden spiky cage of branches using his earth power and flung it at Sadie. Sadie gave a scream as she caught the ball, the spikes digging into her hands and causing blood to trickle down from her wounds. She waved her hands and the ball bounced off, as she stared at Thorn sobbing. "Why did you do that" she whispered, as Deidre ran to her and gasped, "Why would you hurt me like that?" she sobbed. The other children looked upset but Thorn wasn't fazed. He just grinned. "Fae like you don't deserve to live," he said angrily "Your parents should have drowned you while you were a baby" he hissed. Sadie gasped. Gray came beside her. Deidre was worried about her hands. She tugged gently at Sadie. "Let's get you fixed up at the castle" she murmured regretfully, shooting Thorn a scathing glance. She doubted he would be punished even if she informed the King and Queen. Sadie felt the tiniest spark of rage ignite inside of her. Her flashed silver, as her hands clenched into fists. The other children began to scramble away. Deidre held her breath. From all accounts, Sadie shouldn't be able to control the elements, not if she had the power of healing. But she was. The air began to swirl until it was like a small tornado was surrounding them all. Sadie was staring up at Thorn, her eyes narrowed. Deidre felt panicked. She grabbed hold of Sadie's shoulders. Sadie shook her off. Her lips turned into a snarl. "You hurt me" she accused Thorn who was trying to fly away, the wind buffeting him to and fro. Thorn looked scared now. But then Sadie waved her hand and the tornado turned miniature, gently floating up towards a stunned Thorn. It began to whack him over and over again in the head, pushing him backward, his body spinning over and over again in the air as Deidre fought back her laughter. Sadie's eyes slowly returned to normal. Thorn glared down at her. "Stop this already" he snapped. Sadie blinked up at him. She saw the tiny tornado. Had she made that? She didn't remember doing it. She looked at Deidre "I don't know how" she stammered. Thorn rolled his eyes. The tornado was more annoying than anything. As he'd suspected she was a weakling. He waved his hand and the tornado fizzled out. He straightened himself up. Sadie looked away from him. "Deidre" she whispered "can we go back to the castle now?" Deidre clutched at her protectively. "Of course, we can. I want your hands to be looked at" she began as an indignant Thorn flew off and then gasped, glancing down at Sadie's small hands. They were completely healed. There were no signs of injury, let alone any blood. She examined them carefully while Sadie stood patiently waiting. She hoped that Thorn hadn't noticed. If he had. . . she shuddered at the thought. "Let's go back to the castle," she said quietly. "Deidre," Sadie said slowly "Do mother and father hate me because I don't have wings?" she asked. "No, darling" Deidre whispered, kissing Sadie's temple as the little girl hugged her tightly "They don't hate you. They love you." "But they always have time for Stefan" pointed out Sadie as they turned around and began to trudge back to the castle "And he's a lot more work than me," she said thoughtfully. Deidre sighed. "I'm sure as Stefan grows older, that will free them up to spend more time with you," she lied. Sadie scowled. She felt angry again. Deidre noticed a pebble rise from the forest floor and stay in mid-air, hovering for a few moments before dropping to the ground again. Was that Sadie's work? Did her anger have something to do with her powers? Sadie never noticed. Instead, she concentrated on Gray. She petted the top of his head and giggled as he licked her hand, They reached the front gates and the guards nodded to them, one of them smiling kindly at Sadie. They never seemed to be fussed by her not having wings, she thought with a sigh. Then again, maybe it was only because she was the princess she thought bitterly. They walked inside and saw Gerome, the King's advisor hovering in the entryway, a nervous look on his face. Deidre knew instantly something was wrong. "Gerome, what is it? What's wrong?" she asked, her heart thudding. Gerome glanced at Sadie again, and Gray. He swallowed hard. "It's the queen" he whispered, glancing around nervously, "She's not doing well" "What's happened? Is it. . ." Deidre trailed off. Sadie was perplexed. Was her mother sick or something? Gerome looked stricken. "The baby. She's suffering a miscarriage and the King is beside himself" he whispered "I think it's best if you take Sadie to your room tonight because he's in a terrible mood." Deidre winced. The poor queen. This was not her first miscarriage. "Thank you for the heads up, Gerome," she told the man, who nodded and then left. Deidre grabbed Sadie's hand. "We have to go," she said tightly, dragging her towards the back of the castle and the servant's entrance. Sadie was confused. Where were they going? Gray trotted, easily keeping pace with them. Deidre went down a long corridor and then opened a door, gesturing for Sadie and Gray to go inside. Sadie walked in and her eyes widened. The room was small. It barely contained a bed, a dresser, and room to move. Gray looked despondent. He was used to Sadies large room. "It's just for tonight," Deidre said anxiously. Sadie gave her a small smile. "It's okay Deidre. We can share the bed" she offered. Deidre was grateful that the little girl was so easygoing. She sat down on the bed and sighed, The King was determined to have his spare, now that he had his heir and he hadn't let up on it in the last two years. The queen was forced to accommodate his request, which made Deidre mad. Surely he could see the anguish she went through every time she lost a child? She glanced through the doorway and then got up, wobbled over to the door, and slowly closed it, locking the door firmly. The last thing she needed was for anyone to come barging into the room, the King included. As long as Deidre had Sadie with her, the little girl would be safe from harm, she vowed as she returned to the girl's side.
