Third Person POV
She concentrated, her hair tied in a basic plait, her wolf Gray resting its head between his paws, her paintbrush in hand as she surveyed the forest and all the splendor it held. Paint dripped from the brush she held, as she paused, her brow crinkling before she steadily placed the brush into her watercolor paint and swirled it around, before placing the brush against the canvas and delicately painting on it.
Deidre sat with her eyes closed against the tree. Sadie surveyed her, a smile on her face as she painted her nanny, although she was getting a bit old for one now. She was thirteen years old now and growing to be quite a young lady. Gray never seemed to age, which mystified the young girl. She couldn't sense any supernatural power emanating from the wolf, but he should have grown much older and yet he seemed to still be as young as a pup. Deidre muttered in her sleep, her head resting against the trunk of the tree, her soft snores filling the air. Sadie tried not to giggle out loud as she continued to paint the landscape and her nanny, hoping that she might be able to give the canvas as a gift to Deidre.
A group of fae children ran past, kicking a ball at each other and she felt a moment of envy. After that one dreadful experience with the servant children, she had never attempted to play with them again and had kept to herself. But it was lonely with just a nanny and a wolf for company and it didn't stop her from wanting companionship with children of her own age. If only she hadn't been born without wings she thought bitterly. She had even attempted to use her healing power on herself, in order to grow wings but had failed miserably at it. Deidre had told her off in no uncertain terms for even attempting such a stupid thing, but then she didn't know what is was like to be ostracised for being different or the feeling of jealousy she got when she saw the other fae flying in the air. She sighed. Her mother and father continued to ignore her existence, doting on her little brother Stefan, who happened to be sick today with the sniffles. If Sadie could get close to him, she could heal him and make him better, but her mother wouldn't let her go near him and Deidre had advised her to keep her gift a secret.
"Trust me they will use you if they find out" she advised Sadie "I know you care about your brother, but you also need to start considering your own future. I'm sure one day you'll want a family of your own."
As if that would ever happen thought Sadie sourly. She took a deep breath and tried to focus on her painting.
The wind began to pick up. She packed her paints away. She patted Gray and then wandered towards Deidre. Suddenly she felt something tug hard at her plait, stopping her in her tracks, Gray growling lowly in his throat.
"Ouch" cried Sadie, placing her hands on her braid and glancing over her shoulder, to see a grinning Thorn tugging at it "Let go" she hissed.
He pulled on it. She gave a yelp of pain. He let go and she whirled to face him, her green eyes flashing. "What is your problem Thorn?" she snapped.
"You are" he hissed "You're unnatural" he snarled "Vile, repulsive, disgusting" he continued as she flinched from his verbal attack "and yet one of the most beautiful fae women I've ever seen," he said lowly "I can't seem to take my eyes off of you."
Sadie was stunned. Thorn had gone into an apprenticeship at the castle to become a guard and she hadn't seen or heard from him in the last few months. She hadn't expected him to have any feelings towards her at all like this. She struggled, her mouth opening and closing as she gaped at him. He reached out and tucked a stray curl of hair behind her ear.
"I um don't think of you in that regard Thorn" she finally said, cringing away from him.
He'd been nothing but a bully her entire childhood. Why was that finally changing now?
His eyes narrowed. "Sadie, do you honestly think that anyone is going to care for you when you have no wings? You're an undesirable" he muttered "In fact, you should consider yourself lucky that I'm expressing any feelings towards you at all. I want you to keep us a secret" he continued.
Now he was delusional thought, Sadie, fiercely. "I am not yours Thorn" she snapped.
He gripped her arm tightly. The wind swirled around them both. She flinched. Her dress billowed around her. There was a smirk on his face. "My power has only gotten stronger Sadie," he said tightly "and I can control it much better now. I wouldn't be turning me down if I were you" he added.
Sadie wrestled her arm away. Her eyes flashed with indignation "You're older than me for a start" she said evenly.
He laughed "That makes no difference" he pointed out with amusement, the air continuing to swirl around them so that she was forced to shout to be heard.
"I wouldn't be with you if you were the last fae on earth! You've made my life miserable Thorn, all these years. How dare you think that I would just forget all about it."
Now Sadie was angry. Her eyes flashed silver. Rather than be stunned by it, Thorn grinned. He was anticipating this. She held up a hand. Flames shot out of them. Thorn quickly doused them with water. Sadie seemed shocked, before gathering herself. Rocks came flying up from the ground, hovering in mid-air, before flinging themselves at Thorn who managed to dodge several of them, before he got hit by a stray one. He cursed out loud. Sadie narrowed her eyes. "There's plenty more where that came from" she warned him, thoroughly pissed off by now and ready to inflict maximum damage. She forgot about keeping her powers secret but Thorn didn't seem too surprised to see her using them, although judging by the look on his face, he was perceiving her as weak rather than strong, due to her holding back a little with Deidre in mind.
Deidre woke up with a start. She glanced around blearily and glanced up to see Thorn flying in the air, hovering over Sadie who was looking up and glaring at him. There were rocks scattered around the two of them and Sadie was gritting her teeth, her eyes flashing silver in anger. Oh no, thought Deidre, something had happened to make Sadie angry and she had no doubts that Thorn was responsible. She slowly got to her feet. "Thorn" she called out, making his head snap towards her "Are you not meant to be in the castle undergoing your apprenticeship?" she questioned in a sharp tone, making him scowl at her darkly.
"I have the afternoon off," he said with a snarl, not perturbed in the slightest.
Deidre braced herself. There had been talk that Thorn's powers had grown stronger as he'd gotten older and Deidre was worried she wouldn't be able to overpower him if it came down to a fight. Sadie maybe, but she still hadn't learned to control her anger completely and her powers. As it was, now Sadie had shown Thorn that she possessed powers, and she would have to pray he didn't mention it to the king and queen. She bit her lip.
Thorn landed on the ground, his wings folding along his back. He smirked at Sadie who tightened her lips. "I guess I'll be seeing you soon Sadie," he said, a twinkle in his eyes "Don't forget about our little chat now" he added.
Sadie just glared. She tossed her plait over her shoulder, it cascading down her back and lightly tapping her bottom. Gray snarled, coming protectively to Sadie's side. She patted him absently on the head.
"Don't forget what I said" she shouted "Not even if you were the last fae on earth" she repeated, as he turned his back on them all and began to slowly saunter towards the castle, a spring in his step.
Slowly Sadie's eyes began to return back to their normal green color. Deidre looked at her confused, blinking the sleep back from her eyes as she gave a slow yawn. "What on earth was that all about?" she asked in a hushed whisper.
Sadie told her everything. Deidre couldn't believe her ears. Her blue eyes flashed with anger. She clenched her fists, her body shaking in indignation. "We should tell the King and Queen what happened. He could be a threat Sadie" she said angrily.
Sadie just glanced at her sadly "Do you really think they will care Deidre? They'll just dismiss it like they dismiss everything" Her tone was filled with bitterness.
