“You look even skinnier now,” Queen Judith tells me. It takes every bit of self-control that I have not to tell her that I’ve gained weight. “Sit down. You’re late.”
“I’m sorry,” I say. “Prince Joseph must have told me the wrong time.”
“The prince would never! You stupid girl.”
I blink in shock. I’m sure that I’m here at the time he told me.
“The king and the prince are never wrong,” she tells me. “Ever. You need to learn your place.”
I suppress my sigh. That sounds irresponsible and, quite frankly, dangerous for the kingdom. I’m sure they’re wrong sometimes, and someone should be able to speak up when they are. The look on her face tells me it will never be me, though.
“Why the Goddess cursed me with you is beyond me,” she says as food is brought in.
