A Trap!

Davina arrived in work the next morning to see a cup of hot coffee on her desk. She glanced around suspiciously. Her nose quickly tried to pick out any signs of poisoning but there was none. "I think it's safe." Ann muttered. "Safe? Who might have put it there? The only person I know is Dave and we're not even on good terms." Davina muttered back. She slowly made her way to the desk and gently pushed the cup aside. No matter how tempting it was, she was determined to know who had sent it. Just as she was about turning on her computer, she heard an aggrieved voice behind her. "Are you still upset with me? Look at the way you even treat my gift with contempt." Davina chuckled, she swirled around to see the grown man acting like a kindergarten kid, his lips tightly pursed and his cheeks red from anger. "Oh that, I pushed it away because it's too hot." She said coming up with an excuse. The excuse seemed believable so Dave believed it anyway. Because he didn't know how long it'd take for her to get to the office, he had asked for the coffee to be made a little too hot to last for about two hours. "I'm sorry about yesterday." Dave muttered again. Davina who was sitting opposite him felt her cheeks flush in embarrassment. His apologies had made her feel bad. Infact, she had done a rethink on the words and the way she had talked to him the day before and figured out she was a little harsh. "I should be the one apologizing Dave. Over the years I've been so preoccupied with the fact Justice and integrity should be upheld by all officers. I failed to notice that most of our superiors cover their bad deeds with the same words, saying their doing it for the country." She sighed. "I remember a time I solved a case, a son of a tycoon was supposed to be put to death by hanging for murdering pregnant woman's child on purpose. But days before the court hearing, I was called over by my superior and was successfully brainwashed by them. Well...what I'm trying to say is this, as far as the ones above us are corrupt we shouldn't let them know on whose side we stand on..." After Davina was done, Dave's right hand went to his cheeks and he gently stroked it with a smile. "I never asked for a letter of apology ma'am." he teased, a naughty smile on his lips. Davina was successfully cracked up and she laughed loudly. Ignoring the looks from her colleagues, she finally lowered her head on her laps trying to gain back control of her body. After some minutes, she drew back her head. Her cheeks were now crimson red, making her look like a kid. Just then, Dave thought of something. "You know what Davina?" "What?" "If the case is successfully solved you'd go out with me for a day." he proposed. Davina's eyes widened. His proposal, why did it sound like he had faith that the case was going to be solved? Without thinking much, she nodded and swirled back her chair. She turned on her computer. The whole morning, Davina glued her eyes to the computer's screen, her brain making fast calculations and her fingers moving swiftly across the keyboard. She found out the family were relatively well to do. The father was a tycoon, a big one and one who pampered his family. And because of that, he let his wife stare at home with the children while he worked to feed them. While she gathered all those information, Dave who had also taken a seat beside her gleamed for information about the people closest to the family as he suspected an acquaintance was responsible for the disaster. After a long morning of hard work, Davina and Dave finally stopped when it clocked 12. They both had their lunch rested and laughed over a few things. "Can you take me to the scene? I wanna see thing by myself and inspect it with my own nose" She had subconsciously blurted the last part. Hearing her, Dave laughed out. "you wanna smell the air by yourself? I know what you mean but believe me when I say you would find nothing. I've been there a couple of times but they've been no evidence to hold onto. The person who committed the crime is obviously very smart, way too smart." She heaved out a silent sigh of relief obviously happy that he hadn't picked out the weirdness in her words. "You've seen it so many times Dave but I haven't. It'd be good if I see it with my own eyes. Who knows I'd be able to spot something you'll had been ignoring" she insisted. Dave frowned. Sincerely, he never liked to go there as the air there was horrendous and always have him a creepy feeling. But how could he admit he was scared in front of someone? Worst still, a woman? Dave had his own pride and after listening to her pleading for some minutes, he readily accepted but not without telling her she'd go alone in the future if she wished to go. Davina nodded happily, she was already starting to feel that the man would refuse or worst still leave the office In a fit of rage. They stopped In front of a luxuriously decorated building. One look and anyone could tell the former occupants were extremely well to do. The duo carefully walked towards the entrance. They put on their gloves and Davina took out a transparent polythene. Outside the building were some cats lurking around. They all turned their eyes to the two intruders on sighting them. Getting inside, the strong smell of Cat Man hit her nose and she nodded happily fully aware she had come to the right place. That was when she realized, the cats outside were all a distraction!
