Chapter 24It was nearing midnight when Gaspard finally headed down the mountain and back home. He’d spent the evening walking around the Mount Royal. Later, he’d stood on the Belvedere, watching the city lights glitter below. Somewhere in that city, Wolfe slept alone. Many times during the evening, Gaspard had wanted to walk down to his car and drive to Wolfe’s home to beg him to stay. He’d forsake it all for Wolfe. He’d change his life. His address. Anything. But he’d done nothing of the sort. Tired, and at peace with his decision, Gaspard entered his apartment. Curtis was in the living room watching television. “You’re still up,” Gaspard said, hanging up his jacket. “You should be in bed.” “Where were you?” Curtis asked, glancing over at him. “On the mountain, walking. How was your
