Chapter 26On Saturday afternoon, Wolfe stared down at a piece of chocolate cake. His birthday cake. He felt someone tugging at his sleeve and looked over to see his nephew Collin staring up at him. Collin had chocolate icing in his hair, and his little nose was running. “Come here,” Wolfe told him, picking him up and cleaning his face with a napkin as best he could. Collin elbowed him in the stomach, jumped off his lap, and ran out of the room. The child didn’t like him very much. Wolfe looked around the table. Everyone was engrossed in a heated conversation, talking loudly and over each other. The table was cluttered with food and drinks and the remnants of his cake.
