Jesus had wanted to run out of the restaurant, he wanted to fight with his boyfriend for setting him up, he wanted to shout he did not want this for a reason.
But he didn't want to make a scene so he walked to Jamie shaking and after they sat down at a table, Jashmin Sloan, a beautiful golden blonde goddess smiled at him with her big blue bright with happiness, "I'm sorry honey if we took you off guard." She started in a sugary tone. Ophelia laughed nudging her brother, "Yeah this lug wouldn't shut up about you so we got tired of him hogging you."
Jesus blushed, "Well I'm sorry my initial reaction was to stop and gawk like you guys were the Kennedy family. I didn't know I was meeting you guys tonight or I would have dressed a lot better." Ivan waved that off, "You look great man, that jackets amazing."
When the waiter asked for drink orders, Jesus ordered something strong and tried to smile and pretend everything was okay. But he was far from okay.
Ophelia was a sweet girl, she was really funny and kept the table laughing. Looking every bit of her father with dark brown hair and big green eyes, her sweet British accent was whimsical. Jesus felt like he was talking to a fairy. Ivan, an older version of Jamie, and his wife Elsa were the newlyweds, they had Jashmin in dire need of grandkids. And then there was Morris Sloan, a quiet man who sat back enjoying his dinner with a slight grin.
He seemed to just relish in his family's differences, his wife's antics, his daughter's jokes, and his eldest son jumping through hoops to avoid talking about babies. It amused him and when he added his two cents to any conversation it was a two worded response that made his wife smile at him with love.
Jesus was uncomfortable as hell and wanted to run.
"So what do you do Jesus?" Jashmin asked as she bit her roast happily. Jesus coughed a little before saying, "I work at Swift Magazine as it's media coordinator." Ivan nodded, "Sounds interesting." Jesus shook his head, "It's really not I'm mostly tweeting and blogging all day about our magazine, online publishing, and stuff that'll make people want to read."
Jamie grinned proudly, "Yeah but he's recently been given the assignment to write on the advice column until they hire someone." Jesus gritted his teeth as Jamie boasted about him and Ophelia grinned, "Cool so you get to tell guys everything they do wrong? You're my new hero."
Jesus laughed as Jashmin suddenly brought out the big questions, "So you moved here from America...New York was it?" Jesus nodded slowly, "Yes ma'am born and raised." Jashmin c****d her head to the side, "And your parents? Any siblings?"
Jamie tried to tell his mother not to, but Jesus carefully said, "My mom Pamela is a retired teacher, and my father, Miguel, is a mechanic. I have an older brother and a younger sister." Jashmin smiled as she lightly said, "You must miss your family, being so far away from home."
When Jashmin said family Jesus immediately thought of Roze, Warren, baby James, Dex, Abigail, and Hope. Not to mention the forever adorable Jala."Yeah, I do, but we keep in touch." Jesus mused thinking of his actual family as Jashmin smiled in sympathy thinking he meant the one he was born into.
Dinner ended there pretty much, the women all ate a dessert. Jamie was being forced to sit with them while Morris and Ivan pulled Jesus over to the bar.
"Any sports?" Morris asked as he waved the bartender over, Jesus hummed, "Um, I think you guys call it football but in America it's soccer?" Morris nodded, "Right, and my son?" Jesus looked at him confused and Morris looked at Ivan who sighed and admitted, "Jamie's never had a boyfriend that last long term. Guys came and went, kind of like he was experimenting to see if we'd kick me out or disown him. But when he kept mentioning you, we heard it was something serious."
Morris looked at Jesus with serious blue eyes, his brown hair falling on his forehead, "Do you care for him?"
Jesus wanted to tell the truth, that he was pretty sure meeting them had saved Jamie from getting dumped tonight. But Jesus wouldn't dare.
"I do really care for him. I've had my own relationship woes and when I got here, he was the friendly face in the hall. The sweet guy who waited for me to get my head on right so that we could be together. Jamie...he's something."
Morris grinned nodded, "He is, and when he told us you were nervous about meeting us. Didn't seem like you were wanting to, I was worried. But I think it was just the whole idea of becoming serious yeah?" Jesus' nodded jerkily, "Right."
Ivan slapped his back, "Well this is one hurdle down, Jesus. I know what it was like meeting Elsa's family and at first I almost s**t bricks. But once it was over I felt much better. Don't you?"
Jesus hadn't had to answer that because Jamie came over and asked him if he had work in the morning. When Jesus confirmed he did, they all wrapped up dessert and drinks.
Jashmin and Ophelia hugged him bye, Elsa giving both his cheeks a kiss as Ivan slapped his back and Morris shook his hand. "Come home with Jamie any time," He invited kindly. Jashmin eagerly chirped, "Or come to the lake with us next weekend. It'll be a nice time."
Jesus didn't make any promises and as they waited by the valet, Jamie kept trying to make eye contact. First Jashmin, Morris, and Ophelia got in their Benz and left, followed by Ivan and Elsa in there Crysler.
When Jamie's car pulled up, Jesus immediately got in the passenger side as Jamie tipped the driver and got in the car. As he pulled out of the restaurant's parking lot, all was quiet. Neither spoke or looked at each other for five blocks and Jamie exhaled as he pleaded, "Okay can you just get pissed at me already? This silence is killing me since I know you're boiling mad."
Jesus shook his head rubbing his eyes, "I can't, not right now." Jamie stopped at a red light, "Why not?" Jesus looked at his boyfriend and yelled, "Because I might say something I regret!" Jamie jerked back, his eyes widened as tears brimmed them.
Jesus didn't feel bad, he was too angry to feel bad.
Neither said a word as Jamie drove him home, and when they were in front of his apartment Jesus jumped out without saying a word.
This fight wasn't over, and Jamie had a sinking feeling it wasn't going to end with them in bed.
