SOPHIA’S POV My breath caught in my throat. He had already chosen Isabella without giving me the chance to prove myself so there was no point in explaining. He wouldn’t believe me anyway. “Let me go,” my words came out in a whisper. He let me go like my skin burned. “One step forward and two steps back, right?” The space between us felt cold. My chest ached in a way I couldn’t rub away, but I swallowed it down so hard it burned. I came here for something and I won’t stop until I achieve it. I can’t let him get in the way. I turned around and walked out of the bedroom. The hallway felt colder than the bedroom, but at least it wasn’t suffocating. My heels clicked against the floor, each step a reminder that I needed to keep going no matter how badly my chest ached. Anita’
