JACE’S POV I scanned the crowd for Sophia. She was standing by the entrance with Beverly, who looked far too comfortable beside her. Beverly’s hand rested lightly on Sophia’s arm as she leaned in to speak. Sophia’s face was blank, but I knew that look; it was the mask she wore when she wanted no one to see what she was thinking. I started walking back. People tried to stop me for handshakes, congratulations, and questions but I didn’t slow down. My focus was on my wife. When I reached them, Beverly was in the middle of some story, her laugh soft and polite. Sophia stepped back as soon as she saw me.
