SOPHIA’S POV THREE WEEKS LATER I rented a countryside house outside Granada city, somewhere in La Zubia. I should have just bought it but I needed to be able to move without being traced if Jace came looking for the child. The house sat at the edge of a narrow cobblestone road, surrounded by olive trees that whispered when the wind passed through. From my terrace, I could see the faint silhouette of the Sierra Nevada mountains, their peaks still capped with snow even though the afternoons were warm. The air smelled of citrus and earth. The kind that clung to your skin after rain. Every morning, sunlight spilled across the terracotta tiles, painting the walls in soft gold. The neighbors were few and far between, mostly elderly couples who greeted me with quiet nods when I walked
