Glancing at everyone, most of the men were eating, but my eyes landed on Ebony. Noticing the tears behind her eyes made me wonder if she was happy or if she was overthinking everything. My heart ached.
“I think it might be about her family,” Scout murmured as he came closer and watched her as she stood next to my mother.
That could be it.
Pulling her into my arms, I leaned into the crook of her neck and kissed under her ear. I made sure no one could hear me. “This is your family, too,” I whispered. “I know this is hard for you, but if you want to let it out, you should. Your parents would be so proud of you for everything you have been through. What’s mine is yours, even family, and this lot will be there for you as I will be.”
