Chapter 8

Eva I blinked in confusion for the first time since entering. What on earth did he mean by that? So taken aback I almost didn't notice him coming closer until the ghost of wine reached my nose. I stiffened immediately I found him several inches away from me. “I don't believe you came here just for that. Maybe you want … something else? Did you come here to see me?” I was frozen in shock as he leaned closer but his seductive insinuations were clear. Heat rose to my cheeks. His eyes roved over me suddenly before He thought I came here for…dear god! My reflexes finally acted up and I pushed him away where he quickly regained his balance. “You disgust me.” I sneered, pushing him away. He let out a laugh. “Too bad. You're the last person I ever want to sleep with anyways.” He said while laughing, anger rise up in my gut. “Eva?” I turned at the sound of Grace's voice behind me distant. I turned around just to see Grace coming out into the living room with another tray. Her face fell the moment she took in the scene. My heart lurched in sympathy but I couldn't stay here any longer. Spying a final glance at Viktor, I barely mustered a smile at her. “Excuse me. I've done all I needed to do here.” I quickly said Without hesitation I strode to the couch to grab my bag, pushing the documents inside. As I looked up I met Grace's eyes. I passed a silent apology to Grace before turning away, storming past him and out of the living room. I had stayed here for long enough. That asshole. I was still grumbling by the time l returned in the night, slamming the door harshly before throwing myself onto the nearest couch and shutting my eyes. I was mentally drained, but I headed back to S. Corps to deal with some of the work I pushed away earlier, and tried to get my mind off the infuriating events from earlier. The work seemed to do no good considering how I was still thinking about it now I was back home. As I opened them, the silence was deafening. If Cory and Anthea were here, they would have been hugging me by now. I would have pushed it out of my mind. I missed them. My heart ached for them, but they were still gone. I had no choice but to focus on work and prepare for tomorrow. Tomorrow was going to be more daunting however. I sighed helplessly at the thought. With the contract allowing labor changes to his company I was supposed to start dealing with them directly. Considering that most of my time was spent driving to and out of the mansion, there was no time to do that anymore today. I didn't have the patience to either, not after handling threats and veiled insults from three people adding Brienne's new henchwoman. The only saving grace for me was Grace, literally, but she didn't stay long. Tomorrow I was going to have to devote myself to dealing with Reynolds Corps and the staff. All that was dependent on his or anyone else's presence there as an obstacle. With solely imagining his hangover from his state there was a low chance of the former happening. As for anything else…I really hoped it didn't come to that. My stomach grumbled. Standing up, I stretched before moving to the kitchen for dinner. … The next day went on as planned. I set up several meetings with the HR managers of each department in his company looking over the employees lists. I spent time looking through them using the meeting room as a pseudo office when a sharp knock stopped me. I turned around just in time to find a young lanky man awkwardly standing there. “M-Miss Greene?” His eyes looked at me pleadingly. I recognized him vaguely but there was nothing but confusion at his appearance. He bowed slightly before entering the ‘office’, looking nervous. I eyed him carefully in turn. “What’s wrong?” I asked, watching him fidget in place. My stomach coiled in unease. I had a feeling it wasn't anything good. He lowered his head even lower before he spoke. “Mrs ...Mr Reynolds fiance wants to see you. She says it's important.” I bristled, my hand tightening on the papers I was holding. Great. Just the thing I needed now. “When did they come?” I asked, keeping my voice cool and neutral despite the turbulence inside me. “Mrs…she and her friends came less than 10 minutes ago. She's in the executive meeting room. I was assigned to escort her when she suddenly asked about you Miss. When I informed her that you were here she demanded that I call you.” So she knew I was here, which meant that Viktor had told her of the possibility that I would be coming. And here I hoped for a peaceful day. The Executive meeting room. That was the meeting room three floors above, a fact I only knew because of my past experience. I set my jaw before I turned back to him. “Thank you for telling me. You may leave.” he nodded shakily before leaving the room. I wasn't too far behind him as I stood up to pack the documents before dropping them. She wanted to see me? Fine then. I would see her and leave. Ignoring her would probably make her more obnoxious.. It didn't take too long to find the place. I opened the door to find them sitting across the room, talking and laughing. Brienne was in the meeting room and along with her was a gaggle of women in different seats, including Julienne. Five of them, I counted. All of them looked alike to me, not because of their appearances, but I could quickly tell Brienne's influence around them. The same influence she once tried to put on me a long time ago. “You should wear this dress, do your hair like this. Viktor would like you better in this style.” she would say, all veiled in bright eyes and a friendly voice. She was the first female friend I had in a long while thanks to Viktor introducing us after we started dating. I felt insecure about many things, but she was always by my side to assure me and ‘coach’ me on the way to act. I almost fell prey to it until all stopped within that college year, when Viktor noticed it and had confronted me. “I like you because you dress and act like yourself. I don't mind you changing but only on your terms. Don’t let anyone try to change you. Not even my friends.” he had said, kissing my palms. I rid myself of that memory quickly. In the end he must have spoken to Brienne as she completely stopped ‘coaching’ and advising me. It wasn't until the betrayal years after and struggling with everything that I recounted those memories and I could truly see the depth of her machinations. She was manipulative and cunning and she was good at preying on people she considered lower than her. That was evident from the way they seemed to gravitate around her. There was nothing but silence as I stepped in, closing the door behind me but not straying too far from it. All of them had paused to look at me and some were sneering my way. “What are you doing here?” I asked focused on the Queen Bee herself. Brienne huffed in response, giving a seemingly innocent smile. “Why shouldn't I be here? My father's a partner in the company and one of its largest shareholders. I have more of a right to be here. But imagine my surprise when I heard that you were here?” She spoke before waving towards me. “Girls, don't be shy and introduce yourselves. This is Eva, my college mate.” she said brightly. In contrast none of them bothered to look at me, rolling their eyes. “While you're here you might as well ring us drinks. Sparkling water for me.” a brunette waved her hand towards me as if pushing away a nuisance. A surge of annoyance filled me, but it was mostly aimed at Brienne for wasting my time. Did they think this was a bar? “Since that's all you came here for, excuse me while I go do my work.” I said, earning giggles. With those words. I turned away to leave, “Wait, don't you want to meet our surprise guest?” She called out behind me. What surprise? What guest? I fought the urge to roll my eyes as I held the door knob opening the door only to see another figure. My blood turned cold as I looked up and recognized him. Fear struck itself inside me. “Long time no see Eva.” He smirked.
