Chapter 13: Responsibilities
The alarm woke Jade with a sudden shock. She sat up, or tried to; her arms and legs were still pinioned to the bed. “Damn it, Val, I’m awake. Let me up.”
The restraints vanished immediately, and Jade swung herself off the bed. Though she normally slept in the nude, the past few nights she had taken to wearing two-piece pajamas whose bottoms included sturdy slippers; she was not going to be caught unprepared in an emergency.
Her Uzi was on a table beside the bed. She was grabbing it even as she said, “Show me on the screen, Val.”
The wallscreen lit up to show the scene of the lighted area in front of the door. No one was there, and at first Jade was perplexed about what had set off the alarm. Then she caught a flurry of motion in the lower left-hand portion
