The truth between us

(Sloane) Saturday morning I arrived at the hospital at seven. My first surgery was scheduled for eight thirty. A valve replacement. Routine but still required my full attention. I changed into my scrubs and went to pre op. Reviewed the patient's chart one more time. Everything looked good. The surgery went well. Three hours. No complications. The patient was stable when we closed. I scrubbed out and checked on my other patients. Made rounds. Wrote notes. Talked to families. By noon I was in my office catching up on paperwork. I stared at my computer screen but couldn't focus. The divorce was final. I was officially single now. Four years of marriage. Over. Part of me felt relieved. Like I could finally breathe again. Like a weight I'd been carrying for weeks was finally gone. But
