CHAPTER EIGHT
ADAM
Aphrodite and Hermis. Apparently that's my girlfriend's bright idea for a halloween costume. Now, it did make us truly standout and I have an inkling she made sure nobody else was going as those two Greek gods before settling on it. It is arguably very comfy. Well, except for the part where I keep forgetting my staff, you know, the one that Hermis carries around with him all the time.
“You two look so cute together,” This is the millionth time I’m hearing this and for a second, I zone out as Mia begins gushing on how she came up with the brilliant idea. She goes on to give a very detailed lesson on Greek mythology and well, I choose this moment to sneak away.
“Sorry to interrupt but maybe I should grab us some fruit punch before it runs out,” I suggest, pecking her cheek.
“Good idea,” she throws a smile my way before resuming her lesson.
I saunter over to Dylan and Jax by the punch bowl, chatting up with a group of junior year girls. They laugh at yet another poorly delivered joke rolling off Dylan’s lips.
“And there comes the man of the night. Where is your girl?”Jax peers behind me.
I proceed to serve fruit punch in two glasses, “Chatting up with a few classmates. How about you? Got to sell that weed you were bragging about?”
“No luck yet. Mrs. Bethany hasn’t taken her eyes off me, “Dylan frowns and true to his word, when my gaze saunters off to Mrs. Bethany, she had her hawk gaze pinned on Dylan. I wouldn’t blame her. There were rumors always circulating about Dylan and his association with drugs.
“I keep telling him to wait until at the after party, dude won’t even listen to me,” Jax shrugs, “It's like he wants to get in trouble. Maybe you can give it a try, perhaps push a little bit of common sense into that fuzzy brain of his,”
“Oh, I wouldn’t even bother. Anyway, is there any chance someone slipped something in these? Say some vodka or something?” I question, bringing one glass to my lips and only a strong mix of fruit notes hits my tongue.
Ugh! I know I should have listened to my instincts and gotten drunk a little before I came here.
“Yeah, the seniors are a bit lame this year. Wait, till next year when its our turn” Jax wears the same disappointment as I do.
“So you two really didn’t bother dressing up this year, huh?” I acknowledge their banana costumes.
“We are making the headlines tomorrow at The Golden Star fortnight magazine. You know I had no idea this costume was actually a ladies attractor,” Jax flexes his biceps, a confident smirk on his face.
I chuckle, drowning the rest of my punch before refilling it and joining Mia. Nothing interesting happens for the next two hours and by the end of the party, I have no idea how I didn’t bite someone’s head off from boredom.
The party at Dylan’s, serves to make up for the time I’d waste at the halloween school party. But what had almost knocked me off my socks earlier, is when my girlfriend who held a very utter distaste for highschool parties, suddenly claimed to want to come over. If I’m quite honest, I’m very shocked. Sure, I’ve used her as an excuse to go to a few parties (I do feel guilty for that by the way) but seeing her here with me felt too unreal.
“How do you guys drink this? It tastes like…I can’t even begin to describe how awful it is,” Her face scrunches up in disgust the second she tastes the booze.
“You’ll get used to it,” I smile at her, mainly out of amusement. She looks extra pretty tonight and I have not missed how a couple of the senior boys have shown open looks of interest in her. We are, of course, still adorned in our halloween costumes but she has added a touch of gloss to her lips.
“I doubt that,” she shook her head, “Anything that doesn’t taste like this?”
“I’ll raid the fridge for you. Just stay put,” I walk into the kitchen, narrowly avoiding an already tipsy teenager. She offers me a sheepish smile and I just nod for whatever reason before stumbling into the kitchen.
