The door to the medical unit bursts open and an inmate comes running into the unit, screaming his head off. I notice that his hands are open wide and he has a shank held tightly in his right hand. I gasp as I try to get out of his way of this mad man running in here like he owns the place. But, my movement only set him off and when I moved to try and get out of his way, I ended up getting caught straight into his arms.
He wraps his arms tightly around my body and locks his hands behind my back. “Well, hello, beautiful. Why don’t we have a little fun?”
He smirks and leans his weight into me and knocks me clear off of my feet. We fall to the floor of the health care unit as I start to try and fight his grip that is tightly wrapped around my body. I squirm under his weight and try to get my arms and legs free so I can fight him off. I know what I am doing. I have to know what I am doing.
He raises up with the shank in his hand and I see the glint of evil in his eyes. I remember my MMA training and it quickly starts to kick in to try and prevent me from being stabbed to death by this inmate.
I am already formulating a plan in my head when the weight of the inmate is completely off of me. What the f**k? I sit up and start looking around the room slowly. Where did the bastard go? He was right here.
I turn my head left and see the code in progress still, but when I turn my head to the right, that is when I see Nick standing straddling the inmate and I can’t believe my eyes. I watch as he throws punch after punch to the inmate’s face causing him to bleed from his nose and lips. Blood flies every way it can as he holds him down by the neck of his shirt and continues to beat him to a bloody pulp.
“Don’t you ever touch my f*****g nurse,” he screams in his face.
I feel my heart skip a beat at his words. His nurse…? Is that really how he views me?
He stands up and towers over the inmate and I watch as sweat drips from his forehead and trails down his back and chest to his slim waist. He opens and closes his fists in rage as the anger builds behind his normally playful eyes. I don’t know if I like this side of Nick. I have known him for a very long time and I have never seen this side of him before. I swallow hard as something weird happens. My heart continues to race and I feel a rush of warmth cover my body as this top selection of a man stands before me. His rippling muscles that showcase his tattoos glisten with sweat and I watch as he pants from the exertion that he just did.
What the hell is going on? Why am I feeling this way about him? It is just Nick. Nick, the one who bullied you in highschool. Nick, the one who hates everything about you. You have no right to be thinking about him this way. Quit it!
Nick turns slowly towards another officer who just showed up out of nowhere. He took the handcuffs that the man offered him and rolled the inmate onto his stomach with his foot.
“Cuff up, motherfucker,” he pants as he continues to come down from his adrenaline high.
I bite my lip as I feel my own adrenaline rush through my body at what just happened. That is when I realized something… No one would have even noticed me if Nick wasn’t here. That inmate could have killed me, kidnapped me, raped me, and so much worse. But, Nick noticed and he saved my life…
I guess Nick felt my eyes on his body and he turned to look at me. I lowered my head and my eyes so he wouldn’t see me staring at him. I felt him stride over to where I was standing and he grabbed my upper arms with his strong hands.
“Are you alright?” I nod my head, but he scoffs and I feel him tilt my chin up to look into his eyes.
“Damnit, answer me.” I see his fear filled eyes and I know he needs to hear my voice. “Are you alright?”
I nod my head as I continue to look into his eyes. “Yes,” I say as my voice comes out as a whisper and I have to clear my throat. I shake my head and nod it again. “Yes, I’m alright.”
He sighs and lets my chin fall down as he holds me a little closer to his body for a little too long. “Sorry… I’m just glad you are alright.”He turns back towards the inmate laying on his stomach on the ground and starts to move towards him. “Get up, you piece of shit.” He pulls the inmate up by the handcuffs and Nick moves him to a chair next to the active code. He turns to the charge nurse and grabs her attention. “Hey, when you get a free chance, I am going to need a body chart on this fucker.”
“Sure, I’ll get right on that as soon as we are done bringing this fucker back to life,” she screams in response to him over the on going noise of the code.
I watch as Nick snickers and shakes his head slowly with his hands on his hips. “I’m here either way, ma’am. I can wait just as long as you can.”
She groans and rolls her eyes. “Fine, Parks go take care of the body chart.”
I am about to protest when Nick intervenes. “No ma’am. Another nurse needs to do this, not her.”
She sighs and shakes her head. “Fine. Parks take over chest compression. You, go do the damn body chart for Lieutenant Olsen.” She rolls her eyes as she says his title with disdain. I have a feeling I am going to love my charge nurse from here on out.
I quickly swap places with the nurse who was doing chest compressions as she goes over to do the body chart on the guy who just attacked me. I continue to do chest compression as we try to get his pulse back. Emergency medical services have already been called and they pulled into the parking lot about five minutes after he arrived in the unit. As soon as they showed up in the unit, they took over and got him sent to the hospital.
I sigh as I turn towards the charge nurse who seems pissed off at me. “Alright ladies, everybody did a good job… Parks, you need to follow me.”
I swallow hard as I follow her into the office of the director of nursing and she sits me down.
“We have a lot we need to talk about with her,” she says firmly as she slams the door in place.
Mrs. Smith c****d her head to the side and looked at me confused. “What is the matter, Susan? Why have you brought Miss Parks into the office?”
Susan folds her hands over her chest and huffs. “This child is inexperienced and has no business being here. She was pretty much useless during our code and she even got assaulted by one of the f*****g inmates. Get rid of her today or I'll quit.”
I look at her in pure shock and shake my head slowly. I have no idea what is going on here, but I don’t like this.
Mrs. Smith sighs and looks over at me. “Miss Parks, are you alright?”
I nod my head and look down at my hands. “I think so… What did I do wrong?”
Mrs. Smith shakes her head slowly with a soft smile. “You did nothing wrong.” She turns back to Susan and gives her a disdainful look. “If you want to quit, then quit. Don’t try and put this s**t off on the new hire because you feel like she isn’t pulling her weight. This is her first day and I won’t tolerate this s**t. Actually, hold on a minute.”
I watch as Mrs. Smith stands and walks over to the door. She grabs the attention of someone outside the door and motions for them to step into the office.
“Lieutenant Olsen, do me a huge favor please and walk Susan out. She has been stealing drugs from out of our medicine carts, she has been giving stuff to the inmates, and I am just sick of her ass being her.”
“Ten-four, ma’am. I’ll do it right now.” He hooks his hand around the upper part of Susan’s arm and walks her from the room and out of the health care unit as another officer takes the inmate out of the back door to a holding cell before taking him up to restrictive housing.
I look back at Mrs. Smith and shake my head slowly. “What was that all about?”
She sighs and gives me a very sad look. “She knew she was training her replacement. That is what that was all about… Now, what all did she already show you and teach you? Did she follow policy?”
I shrug my shoulders and shake my head slowly. “I have no idea to be honest.”
She sighs and looks at her office mate and shakes her head. “We will need to bring in one of the PRN people to train her.”
She nods her head. “You’re right… I know just the one too.”
