I watch as Katie walks away again. Sometimes I forget just how feisty she can be, but I always remember just how sweet she actually is. I once saw her pick up a cat that had been attacked by a dog and hold it as it took its final breaths. She truly does have a heart of gold even if I know I will never be allowed to see that side of her.
“What a f*****g b***h,” Williams scoffs.
I c**k my head to the side and turn on him. “What did you just say?”
“I said, what a f*****g b***h. Who the f**k does she think she is? I am a f*****g lieutenant here and she thinks she can talk to me whatever way she wants? That isn’t going to happen. I’ll walk her out in a heartbeat if she isn’t careful.” I watch him closely as he frowns and starts to put his bike helmet into his bag. “I’ll show her.”
I sigh and shake my head as I put the kickstand down on my own bike. I throw my leg over the side and land on both feet before I walk over to Williams and grab him by the scruff of his shirt. I turn him around to face me and I push him into Katie’s car.
“Look, Williams, I know this might be a hard concept for you, but she isn’t interested. Leave her the f**k alone. Don’t talk to her, to look at her, and don’t breathe her f*****g air. If you try to walk her out, I will override it and keep her here. If you try to cause drama or start s**t, I will stop it. She has worked too f*****g hard for you to come along and ruin her life just because you feel like you were disrespected. She is a nurse but has the right to choose who she dates and it doesn’t mean she has to always be nice. That includes being nice to you.”
He scoffs and pushes me off of him. “Oh, I see. So you're telling me she is only for you? Nice try, but I am sure that I can get to her well before you do.”
I roll my eyes and shake my head. “That is not what I am telling you, dumb f**k. She doesn’t want you. Leave her alone.”
“Oh, so you’ve actually already had her and you are holding out on the rest of us?” He smirks. “Well, I don’t believe you. I can spot a virgin from a mile away and she is for sure a virgin in all the ways that matter.” He sighs and rolls his shoulders back. “I’ll get her. I’ll make her mine. You’ll see.”
He stalks off into the facility and I just can’t help but stand there and shake my head. Is this guy a total dumb ass? What is he thinking? Katie literally just stood here and turned him down in the harshest way possible and he didn’t even seem to understand it. What the f**k is wrong with this guy?
I sigh as I grab my s**t and head inside to start the work day. I know that I will end up being assigned to medical today or to the front gate. I really hope it is the front gate, but a part of me, deep down, hopes it is medical.
As I walk into the facility, Josh is already there and is staring Williams down. I think Katie may have already told him about what happened in the parking lot since she is nowhere to be found. I don’t blame her, needless to say, but I now have to make sure Josh doesn’t try to kick his ass while we are at work. I am placing my s**t on the check-in table when Warden Joshnson walks out of his office and into the front lobby.
“Good afternoon, everyone.” We all stop and turn towards him. “It has come to my attention that there are certain individuals possibly bringing contraband into my camp. I won’t have it. As a result, the camp is on lock down and the K-nine officers are coming into the camp to do a thorough search of everyone, their property, and of the inmates. So, I want everyone to leave your stuff on the front table and I want you all to make your way to the shift office. I have already placed all of the inmates in their cells and we have locked down all of the cell blocks. The only movement in the camp will be from the captains and me.”
I nod my head and I turn to head toward the shift office. I can already feel the anxiety of some of the younger officers who are still new to our facility. They are looking around nervously but what they don’t understand is that this happens about once every other month on each shift. Today, it is happening between shifts so they don’t have to hold up the K-nine dogs for too long.
I push open the door to the shift office and grab a chair to sit in. I know this is going to take a while to clear the whole facility, everyone’s cars, their personal belongings, the inmates, and the nursing staff. I sigh and shake my head as I kick my feet up on one of the desks and just wait. I pretend to have my eyes closed, but I am really looking for anyone acting overly suspicious. I don’t trust most of these guys I work with because I know that they like to treat some of these inmates like they are people. They aren’t people though, they are inmates. They are criminals who have done things to land them in a maximum security prison for twenty-five years to life without parole.
I slowly look around the room and something in the far corner catches my eye. I see Officer Barks speaking with Williams. I feel my blood boil as I know that Barks is a suspect and part of the reason this is happening. I can’t help but wonder what they are talking about, but there is nothing I can do to know for sure. Not unless I had superhuman hearing or something. I don’t have that.
Instead of continuing to watch them, I motion for Josh to come over and pretend to talk to me instead. He nods his head and moves closer as I sit up in the chair and pull an empty seat beside me.
“So, what do you think they are looking for,” he asks as he sits down and looks directly at Williams and Barks just as I have been.
“I’m not sure, but I know they will find it. They always find what they are looking for in this place.” He nods his head and I turn to face him to make us look less conspicuous. “So… Did you speak with your sister this afternoon before she went to the medical unit?”
Josh nods his head and seems to growl. “Yeah, she told me… Ever since we got in here those two have been talking nonstop about her. I know the others are talking about her too, but I doubt they are saying the same nasty s**t that those two bastards are.”
I frown and shake my head slowly. “Do I even want to know what they have been saying?”
Josh sighs and shakes his head in response. “No, but I can and will tell you that it is beyond disgusting and what they have been implying makes me wish I could cut their throats right now. Even if she weren’t my sister, what they are suggesting is horrible.”
I inhale sharply and I open and close my fists as I try my damnedest to not get up and beat the ever loving s**t out of the both of them. I mean, Williams wanting to hit on and date Katie, I could see. He is roughly the same age as Josh and me and he might be able to land her if he could ever figure out how a woman wants to be treated.
Barks on the other hand. Well, that mother fucker is over twice Katie’s age. She is twenty-two years old and his fat, balding ass is in his mid forties. I know Katie isn’t into him and I know he makes her uncomfortable. Hell, the fat bastard makes me uncomfortable, and I am not even his f*****g type.
I smirk as I shake my head at the thought of him hitting on me. I know Katie was being nice to him yesterday, but I think he has figured out that she wants nothing to do with him at all. The man is beyond sickening with everything he does. I truly hope that he gets the s**t beat out of him one day. It would be really nice to watch that happen.
About thirty minutes after we got sent to the shift office, the warden and captains all walked in with a singular K-nine officer in tow. I watch as Warden Joshnson looks around the office and finally finds the person he is looking for. He walks directly over to Williams and Barks and I see the stern frown on his face as he approaches closer and closer to the pair. I sit and wait with baited breath as the scene unfolds in front of my very eyes.
“Barks… I need you to turn around and place your hands on the wall.”
The bastard swallows hard as he nods his head and does as he is told. The warden nods to the K-nine officer and has him search Barks thoroughly. We all watch as the dog hits on him and an audible gasp rings through the office.
“I want to be sure of this,” Warden Johnson states. He nods to Williams and says, “move.”
Williams swallows hard and moves to the other side of the room. The whole room shifts as far away from Barks as they can before the warden signals for the dog to search again. When the dog hits again, we all know that it is a done deal.
“Alright,” Warden Johnson states. “Officer Frank Barks, you are under arrest for promoting contraband in a prison. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say, can and will be held against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you can not afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you. Do you understand these rights as they have been read to you?”
Barks says nothing as the K-nine officer cuffs him and walks him out of the facility. I purse my lips as I watch Williams even closer now. I don’t know why, but I have a feeling that this entire encounter has only just started something far worse to occur. At the end of the day, the only person I can care about is myself though. I care about Josh too, but the main person is myself. I might care just a touch about Katie too… Only a touch.
