Chapter Ten

I Abraham didn't say anything at first, he only stared at me with a shocked and bewildered expression. He hadn't expected me to say it upfront and I doubted it had ever crossed his mind that I knew something about his secret. Actually, his family secret. We were sitting on a bench at the edge of the park that was a couple of feet away from my house. Abraham was trying to keep his composure even if his face showed otherwise. I was beginning to think he was cocky and overly confident. "So... are you going to say anything or are you going to just stare at me like a lost puppy, pun intended," I said with a slight smirk and he chuckled as he shook his head. "You really are something, Evangeline," he whispered. For some reason, the comment made my insides tingle and I shivered in delight. "Thanks, but you barely even know me." He nodded his head and shrugged, "I think we're going to get along just fine." I raised an eyebrow, he saw himself having a friendship with me? Because he didn't seem to be the type of guy I would usually be friends with. He quickly cleared his throat and turned his body to face me. "Anyway, what do you want to know?" I shook my head and shrugged, "everything, I don't know anything about... your world." He eyed me carefully before responding, making sure I was sure I wanted to know. "Right, well, there's nothing much to tell. Werewolves have been around for many many years but there was a time they almost went extinct. My mother and father were some of the first to emerge but it was because it was decided by the Moon Goddess and a powerful witch." I shifted uncomfortably at the mention of the Moon Goddess. He raised an eyebrow but continued, "after that, werewolves began to thrive. My mother and father became Alphas of our pack and since then we have lived where we live now. It's our territory." I tilted my head in confusion, my mind was still spinning with confusion. "I understand the words you're saying but I'm not sure I understand the context. Your parents are like... rulers, King and Queen of werewolves? And your pack is the only one that exists? I am guessing a pack is a group of werewolves that live together." Abraham moved his head in a way that said kind of, and then he looked at me. "Yes, a pack is a group of werewolves that live together. Each member has some kind of duty. Usually, packs run a business where everyone chips in but my pack's case is different. We get our money from what every one provides. Every member of my pack works in whatever profession they enjoy and then we gather all that money and invest it on our way of life." "So like communism," I interrupted before thinking and quickly blushed. I was thankful that it was dark or else Abraham would have noticed. Abraham laughed and shook his head. "In a way, I guess you could say that but it's not like with humans. As for werewolves, it's in our nature to protect everyone in our pack and care for them. Everyone has a voice, an opinion, and a say. In the end, you could say that it is functional communism, although we don't like that term, it's just the werewolf pack way." I nodded my head in understanding as I tried to process everything. "Now about my parents being King and Queen of werewolves, no, they're not. My aunt, Katherine Lupus-Greenwood, is the legitimate Queen, always has been since her birth and her mate is the King. They are their closest friends. My parents are just leaders of my pack, they try to keep the order in our group and report to the King and Queen, once they retire or in the worse case, die, I will take their place as Alpha. Our pack is just one out of many out there." My mouth opened in surprise, I was amazed that no one had noticed the presence of werewolves before. Someone must have realized they existed. Someone besides me. "How come not many humans know about you?" I asked slowly and he pursed his lips. "No human does actually we usually keep to ourselves because it's easier that way. Not to mention that other supernatural creatures are under a veil that no human eye could see through. You are the only one who managed to figure it out and see through the veil, and I was actually meaning to ask you that; how did you find out?" he had crossed his arms in front of his chest as he looked at me intently. I tensed underneath his gaze but quickly reminded myself that he was a werewolf, this was his world, there was nothing I could say that would seem out of the ordinary. "One day I saw flying creatures out in the library's garden and they seemed just as surprised as me when I was able to see them but I waved that off as exhaustion and went home. But then, today, I saw a huge wolf in the woods and he seemed hungry, I got scared and thought that was the end of me. But then, another wolf, a bigger one, appeared and scared the other away. I thought the bigger wolf decided I was going to be its meal but no. He walked towards me and touched my hand with its snout. It took me by surprise because I felt tingles and electricity course through me. It was... magical. I was sure it wasn't a normal wolf. And then, I fainted." By the time I paused, I saw Abraham stiffen uncomfortably as he listened and I thought I had said something wrong. He wouldn't look at me which I found odd, he didn't seem to be a nervous type of person. "Is there something wrong?" I asked slowly and he closed his eyes and shook his head before turning to look at me once again. "No, don't worry. I'll tell you soon enough," he said, his face neutral but I could tell something was weighing him down. I raised an eyebrow but didn't press the subject as I nodded my head and let out a deep breath. "After that, I thought I woke up but I didn't. I was in some kind of field I couldn't recognize and I walked through it trying to find an exit but it stretched further on endlessly. Then a woman appeared, she looked too surreal to be real, and indeed, she told me she was the Moon Goddess and that the reason why she was there was that I had reached out to her. Which I don't think I did. And then she said... some things and told me about werewolves being real and that I had to find Morgan, a witch. Apparently, she holds all the answers as to why I know about your world and as to what my purpose is," I didn't know what had given me the courage to tell Abraham all this. I barely even knew him and yet, I was telling him about the weirdest experience I had ever been through before anyone else, even before Cole. I only held the most important part of the conversation back, but I didn't want to say it. As soon as the words left my mouth it would all become real and that would mean I was accepting my way. Which in some ways, I was, I had been out in the middle of the night heading into the unknown to find a creature I had never even seen before, and that had almost gotten me killed. Or worse. "I didn't expect that. The Moon Goddess doesn't usually reach out to anyone but to the Royal Family or anyone she has a plan for. That must mean you're important in some way. Did she say anything else?" His voice had suddenly turned worried and his eyes held so much uncertainty it was hard to lie. I quickly shook my head and raised an eyebrow slightly. He only nodded his head slowly but thoughtfully as he pondered another reason for me to know about the supernatural world. "The witch you speak of, Morgan, my mother has mentioned her before. She is acquainted with her, we could ask her if she knows where Morgan is," he suggested slowly and my eyes widened. This must be the reason why the Moon Goddess put Abraham in my path. "Really? Do you think she could help?" hope began to grow inside of me. Abraham smiled, "I'm sure she could and if she couldn't, there's also my aunt, Queen Katherine." My eyes widened as he mentioned the Queen, I hoped I wouldn't have to meet her soon. She would ask me more questions than anyone else. And I wasn't ready to answer any of them. Not until I found Morgan. "Could we go ask now?" I asked quickly, remembering the real reason as to why I wanted to hurry. Abraham chuckled and shook his head. "Evangeline, it's only a couple of hours after midnight, everyone is asleep but us." I blushed intensely, he had a point. "Us and those men back there," I said, half-jokingly. My comment only seemed to anger Abraham as I saw his eyes darken greatly. My eyes widened but I wasn't scared. Somewhere inside of me, I knew that he would never hurt me. "What were you doing in the city, anyway? You live very far away and you just happened to run into me," I said with a raised eyebrow. He shifted uncomfortably as he hesitated for a moment. "I was just walking... trying to clear my mind. You said it yourself, I am a werewolf, sometimes I go out on long walks. I just happened to see you. And a good thing too or else, who knows what could have happened." I eyed him closely, something told me he wasn't being completely truthful with me but I wasn't sure if I wanted to know the whole story. Not tonight. "Well, I am glad you happened to be there. Thank you for clearing some of my doubts about your world," I said slowly and he nodded his head. "I'm glad I could help although I think my mother would be more help." I only nodded my head and after a moment of silence I sighed and began to get up. "Well then, I better get home. I hope you'll come in the morning so that we can go talk to your mother," I said nervously. "Really? So soon?" he asked slowly and I nodded my head eagerly. "Yes, the sooner the better." "May I ask why you're so eager?" he asked slowly and when I didn't answer he nodded his head in defeat. "Alright. I'll come get you in the morning. Let me walk you home," he suggested and I quickly shook my head. "There's no need, I live only a couple of houses down." "Just in case, I insist," as soon as the words left his lips I felt a slight warmth fill me and I didn't object. We walked in silence to my house and as soon as we reached the front door I turned and smiled kindly at him. "Thank you Abraham. Good night." He smiled kindly and took my hand between his before pulling it towards his lips and placing a soft kiss on it. "Good night Evangeline. Sleep well." I was breathless by his action that sent sparks throughout my body just like with the wolf in the woods. I quickly pulled away and smiled kindly before rushing inside and closing the door after me. My breaths came out as gasps as I replayed what had just happened in my mind and the sensation. There was definitely something to it. I could feel it.
