My mother stopped the car with a sudden hit of the brakes. I winced as I placed my hand over my abdomen. I did not know why it hurt so much. My only guess was that Evangeline was hurt somewhere and she needed immediate medical attention. “I am sorry, I should have started to push the brakes before,” my mother said apologetically as she eyed me closely. I could tell she was debating on whether or not to let me go on my own. “You still need to run a couple more miles,” she said uncertainly. I nodded my head as I straightened my back and opened the door.
